The initial main event for the UFC's fourth Live on Versus card pitted Anthony Johnson, fresh off an impressive victory over Dan Hardy, against former middleweight title contender Nate Marquardt, who was looking to make his debut at 170 lbs.
Not too long after the fight was announced, Johnson was forced to withdraw from the card due to an injury and was replaced with Rick Story. Story had just defeated former welterweight title challenger Thiago Alves at UFC 130, less than a month before the scheduled bout with Marquardt. Story was regarded as one of the premier up-and-coming welterweights in the promotion and there was a great deal of anticipation for him to meet Marquardt in the Octagon.
Then, hours before the weigh in, for undisclosed medical reasons, Marquardt was removed from the main event and promptly released from the UFC completely. The only fighter available to the UFC to fill in was Charles Brenneman, whose scheduled opponent for the night, TJ Grant, withdrew from their fight on the preliminary card due to illness.
Brenneman, a local fighter from Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, was referred to as "Rocky" before the fight, acknowledging the Hollywood worthy story it would be for Brenneman to upset Story. Most did not seriously consider the possibility, and when the fight opened with Story easily shrugging off Brenneman's first take down attempt, it appeared as if those people were correct.
However, Brenneman continued to fight hard and ended up spending most of the first round in dominant position on the ground in Story's guard. As if that first round wasn't surprising enough, Brenneman came out in the second round and did the exact same thing going into the third round up two rounds to none.
Story fought hard in the third, gaining dominant positions and battling for several kimuras, almost locking in a triangle choke. Nevertheless, Brenneman was able to avoid any serious trouble, and with help from a poor stand up by referee Marc Matheny, was able to hang on and take the fight to a decision which he won 29-28 on all three judges' score cards.
So, whats next for both of these fighters? Does Brenneman get another top contender? How much momentum did Rick Story lose with this fight?
