Cheick Kongo returns to face Travis Browne at UFC 120
by Jacob Camargo on July 02, 2010

A heavyweight bout between 12-fight UFC veteran Cheick Kongo and undefeated prospect Travis Browne is expected to take place at UFC 120 in October.

News of the bout was first reported by MMAjunkie.com, which states that both men have verbally agreed to the bout.

Kongo (15-6-1) hasn't fought since defeating Paul Buentello at UFC on Versus 1 in March. He was originally slated to face Roy Nelson at tomorrow's UFC 116 event, however, the bout was scrapped from the event after Kongo withdrew due to a back injury.

Kongo has put together a 8-4 UFC record since debuting with the promotion in July 2006, scoring other notable Octagon wins coming over Christian Wellisch, Mostapha Al Turk, Antoni Hardonk, Assuerio Silva and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. The French striker has finished 12 of his 15 career wins including nine by TKO or KO.

Browne most recently was victorious in his UFC debut, as he scored a very impressive first round TKO win over James McSweeney at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale last month. The win improved his stellar professional MMA record to 10-0, notching previous wins in other notable promotions such as King of the Cage, Gladiator Challenge and Bellator Fighting Championships.

Browne has scored stoppage wins in all but one of his 10 victories including eight by TKO or KO and, he holds other notable career wins over the likes of Mychal Clark, Aaron Brink and Abe Wagner. He currently trains at the Alliance Training Center in California with the likes of UFC light-heavyweight Brandon Vera, UFC heavyweight Joey Beltran, as well as WEC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz.

The as-of-yet announced UFC 120 event takes place on October 16 at the O2 Arena in London, England and will air on on Spike TV. The event is also expected to feature the return of former UFC welterweight title challenger Dan Hardy, as he will face Carlos Condit.

 |  (13) Comments Anthony: Seems as if Travis Browne has excoriated more than he can masticate - that means bitten off more than he can chew, for those of you in Rio Linda, West Palm Beach and Staten Island. Jambi: I don't know, this is the same kind of situation that Hathaway and Macdonald were in a while ago. a much more experienced guy vs a green up and comer. Hathaway won and macdonald did really well, so lets see if Browne can do the same, after all i can bet he has a better ground game than Kongo. Wandering_Minstrel: Travis Browne is a big dude who packs a lot of power. If he can finish Kongo that would be mighty impressive. Kongo is a gatekeeper for the HW division. This is to see where Browne is at. Gammon: Am I the only one who thinks this is just right for Browne? In a division where if you wanted a well known name that you know will both progress you and that you have a very serious chance against...Kongo fits the bill perfectly. The Hitman: This is going to be a great fight. It's a tough pick right now IMO. I think it ends suddenly fingerssfv: Kongo will have his hands full. Browne will need an extra special cup, also. Kongo is known (and I mean well known) for his illegal knee strikes to the family jewels of his opponents. Purpoosely kicking someone in the nuts should be grounds for immediate disqualification. Should be, but they're not. That's ok, though; Travis Browne will be one tough cracker for Kongo to crumble. I don't think he can do it, either. Carlos Condit has a better chance of beating his opponent, Dan Hardy, than Kongo does of beating Browne. We'll see. Remember: anything can happen. I recently got chewed out online for stating something about Lesnar that I honestly do not recall, but I have since changed my opinion of him. That's probably because I pulled for Lesnar to beat Carwin (which he did). The Surprise of the Night was how he won. Amazing. He was getting it handed to him in round one, yet he managed to pull a Frank Mir on Carwin and choked him out. That's what I was chewed out for, BTW: Mir getting beat up by Lesnar, until Mir "lucked out" and pulled off the submission. Of course, it's ok for Lesnar to do that, but not Mir (according to arcangel77--or whatever the ID is). Yep, Lesnar can get his as* kicked, then somehow luck out and pull off a submission on Carwin and that's ok, but when Mir did that: boy howdy was I chewed out for having faith in Mir. fingerssfv: Kongo will have his hands full. GO HARD: im taking kongo... hes not dumb and doesnt have a loss to give rite now.. The Hitman: This is a huge jump in competition for Browne from McSweeny. I have to go Kongo simply because he needs the win and Browne is moving up quickly.
