The UFC today announced the addition of a heavyweight bout between strikers Cheick Kongo and Paul Buentello to the televised main card portion of its UFC on Versus 1 event on March 21 at The Odeum Colorado in Broomfield, Co.
The UFC also recently confirmed a previously reported lightweight bout between Spencer Fisher and Duane Ludwig for the preliminary portion of the UFC on Versus 1 card.
The UFC on Versus 1 event is headlined by a much anticipated light-heavyweight bout between Jon Jones and Brandon Vera. In addition, rising contender Junior dos Santos will take on former UFC heavyweight title contender Gabriel Gonzaga in the night's co-main event.
Kongo (14-6-1) has lost back-to-back fights against Cain Velasquez and most recently suffered a first round submission loss against former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 107 last month. Prior to the losses, he was on the verge of a title shot, with three straight wins over Dan Evensen, Mostapha Al Turk and Antoni Hardonk.
The French striker has put together a 7-4 UFC record since debuting with the promotion in July 2006, with other notable Octagon wins coming over Assuerio Silva and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.
Buentello (27-11) dropped a close majority decision to Stefan Struve in his Octagon return, which also took place at UFC 107: "Penn vs. Sanchez" on Dec. 12. Prior to the loss, he put together 5-1 mark with rival promotions Strikeforce and Affliction, his only loss during the successful stretch came against Alistair Overeem in a bout that was for the first ever Strikeforce heavyweight title in Nov. 2007.
Buentello sports a 3-2 UFC record, which includes a solid 3-1 record in his first stint with the promotion from Feb. 2005 to Feb. 2006, with other Octagon wins over the late Justin Eilers and Gilbert Aldana, as well as Kevin Jordan. His only other UFC loss came from Andrei Arlovski in a UFC heavyweight title bout at UFC 55.
