Chris Horodecki on the verge of signing with WEC
by Jacob Camargo on October 20, 2009

The WEC is close to adding one of the bigger free agents on the market, former IFL standout Chris Horodecki, to its quickly growing lightweight division. Negotiations are in the final stages and Horodecki may sign a contract with the WEC within the week.

News of Horodecki's possible signing with the WEC came from from his trainer and mentor, Shawn Tompkins.

"It looks like Chris Horodecki will be showing up in the WEC," Tompkins told FightHype.com. "We are really close to solidifying the rumor, and within the next day or two."

Once signed, Horodecki will be considered an immediate threat in the division, though he will have to contend with the likes of Shane Roller, Rob McCullough, Anthony Njokuani, Dave Jansen, Danny Castillo, and Donald Cerrone in the WEC's crowded lightweight division. Sitting at the top of WEC's 155-pound division is WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner and WEC interim lightweight champ Ben Henderson.

Horodecki opened his career with four straight stoppage wins in Canada's TKO promotion, but he made big waves in the MMA world fighting for the now-defunct International Fight League promotion. He went 8-1 with the IFL, scoring notable wins in the promotion over Ryan Schultz, Bart Palaszewski and Shad Lierley. Horodecki suffered his lone career loss with the IFL as he was upset by Ryan Schultz in the first-ever IFL lightweight title fight.

Following the IFL's demise, Horodecki was slated to face Dan Lauzon at Affliction: "Day of Reckoning" back in January, however, the California State Athletic Commission did not medically clear him for the event due to a bulging disc in his neck, which took away 80 percent of the strength in his right arm.

The Horodecki vs. Lauzon fight was rescheduled for Affliction: "Trilogy," but the event was canceled and the promotion later folded its MMA operations.

Horodecki is currently riding a two-fight winning streak, with his most recent win coming against William Sriyapai via first-round submission at June's "Ultimate Chaos" event in Biloxi, Miss. The 22-year-old sports a near-perfect MMA record of 13-1, with seven of his wins being stoppages, including six by TKO or KO.
