A lightweight bout between popular veteran Clay Guida and Brazilian submission expert Rafael dos Anjos is in the works for UFC 117 on August 7 at the at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
News of the bout was first reported by MMARecap.com, which states that both men have verbally agreed to the bout.
Guida (26-11) is coming off of a second round submission win over Shannon Gugerty at UFC on Versus 1 in March, earning "Submission of the Night" honors. Prior to the win, he lost back-to-back fights against Diego Sanchez and Kenny Florian.
Guida has put together an up and down 6-5 UFC record since debuting with the promotion in October 2006, scoring other Octagon wins over Justin James, Marcus Aurelio, Samy Schiavo, Mac Danzig and Nate Diaz. He suffered other UFC losses to Roger Huerta, Tyson Griffin and Din Thomas.
Dos Anjos (14-4) is currently riding a three-fight winning streak, which includes victories over Rob Emerson, Kyle Bradley and most recently Terry Etim at UFC 112 in April. His second round armbar submission win over Etim netted him an extra $75,000 for the "Submission of the Night" bonus.
Dos Anjos was previously on the verge of being cut from the UFC after losing his first two bouts in the promotion against Jeremy Stephens and Tyson Griffin. He has been competing professionally for over five-years, while fighting for other notable promotions such as Xtreme Fighting Championships, Pancrese and Fury Fighting Championship.
Though not officially announced, UFC 117 is expected to be headlined by a UFC middleweight title bout between current champion Anderson Silva and challenger Chael Sonnen. Other rumored bouts for the card include Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida, Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch II and Tim Boetsch vs. Thiago Silva.
