July 11th's UFC 100 is overflowing with great fights and storylines. In a single night, one can watch the classic battle between size and experience in Lesnar vs. Mir. One can watch what happens when the contrasting styles of the two Ultimate Fighter coaches clash in Bisping vs. Henderson. One can even watch a hall of famer or a young up-and-comer in Mark Coleman or Jon Jones. Or one can watch two incredibly dangerous strikers face off in what is bound to be a "standup-and-bang" classic with St. Pierre vs. Alves.
However, there is one storyline that does not seem to be covered as well as it should. Jon Fitch will be fighting Paulo Thiago on the main card. You all remember Jon Fitch. You know, the guy who was 8-0 before getting manhandled by Georges St. Pierre in Minneapolis. Almost every MMA website, magazine and radio show said that Fitch would be St. Pierre's toughest test of his career. However, Fitch barely held on to his consciousness as he eeked out a decision loss to the Canadian.
Fitch's next fight did not make sense. He fell from a title shot against arguably the best fighter in the world to a fight against Akihiro Gono. Gono was even coming off of a loss to Dan Hardy in England. Fitch won a convincing decision which I scored as 30-26.
Fitch will now fight the undefeated Paulo Thiago. Thiago is coming off of an impressive knockout over Josh Koscheck. But this will only be his second fight in the octagon. One can't help to feel like Fitch is being fed fighters that are not on his talent or experience level.
Say that Fitch destroys Paulo Thiago via rape, pillage and plunder (which the betting odds suggest). What happens next? Fitch has already beaten Alves. Does the title shot go to Mike Swick or Jon Fitch? It should probably go to Swick simply because Fitch does not have many recent wins over big names to solidify his case. So while they pad his record, these last two fights for Fitch may make him wait longer for his second shot.
But what does not make sense is that now people are saying that Thiago Alves will be St. Pierre's toughest test. Yet they said the same exact things about Jon Fitch as well a mere two fights ago. Jon Fitch went 8-0 in the UFC before facing St. Pierre. His wins included Luigi Fioravanti, Diego Sanchez, and he even finished Thiago Alves. So should Alves be receiving as much hype as he is?
Alves holds impressive victories over Josh Koscheck, an old Matt Hughes, and a depressed Karo Parisyan. The Brazilian now has to face St. Pierre in what could be a career maker or a huge setback (see Jon Fitch). Fitch was standing in Alves' shoes just two fights ago, however he couldn't live up to the hype. How will Alves handle it? Only time will tell.
