by FiveKnuckles.com Staff on November 04, 2009

The CompuStrike program produces data in 21 categories, including arm strikes (power strikes and clinch strikes), leg strikes (kicks and knees) and ground strikes. Tallied arm strikes, leg strikes and ground strikes produces a "Total Strike" stat. The CompuStrike program also tallies takedowns, takedown attempts, reversals, submission attempts, and dominant positions.

Below is a breakdown by CompuStrike highlighting previous fights from Jake Shields and Jason Miller. The odds set Shields as the 2.5-1 favorite.

Jake Shields

6/6/09 - W sub 1 (guillotine choke- 2:02) Robbie Lawlor - Shields scored an early takedown, before Lawlor got fight to the feet and outlanded Shields 10-2 in arm strikes. Shields pulled guard with an arm-in guillotine choke forcing Lawlor to tap at 2:02 of round one. The win was Shields' 12th straight. His last loss, nearly five years ago, was 12/14/04 L 3 (decision) to Akira Kikuchi at The Shooto Year End Show '04.

10/4/08 -  W sub 2 (armbar- 3:47) Paul Daley- Shields mounted Daley with 3:15 left in round one and proceeded to land 35 ground strikes- never hurting the British striker. Daley was taken down by Shields after stuffing his previous two takedown attempts. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt then maneuvered into position for the armbar, as Daley tapped at 3:47 of round two. 43 of Shields' 46 total strikes landed were from the ground. He also scored three takedowns.

7/26/08 - W sub 1 (guillotine choke- 1:03) Nick Thompson - Shields followed a stiff body kick with a takedown that led to a one-armed guillotine that turned Thompson's head bright red, forcing him to tap at 1:03- without landing a single strike.

11/10/07 - W sub 1 (rear naked choke - 3:39) Mike Pyle - Shields was rocked by a knee as he shot a takedown. They exchanged takedowns before Shields mounted Pyle and ended the fight with a rear-naked choke at 3:39. Shields' three takedowns led to 11 ground strikes landed among his 18 total strikes landed.

Jason Miller

12/15/07 - W 3 (unan dec.) Tim Kennedy - Kennedy outlanded Miller 20-12 in round one, including 14-4 in arm strikes. Kennedy also scored two takedowns and had three submission attempts. Miller rebounded in round two by outlanding Kennedy 18-8 in total strikes, 14 of which came from the ground position. A Miller elbow opened a bad cut on Kennedy's nose.

Miller survived two more Kennedy submission attempts in round three and dominated the round with 23 ground strikes landed. Overall, Miller landed 55 of 100 total strikes to 37 of 94 for Kennedy. 37 of Miller's 55 landed strikes were from the ground.

12/1/06 - KO by 2 Frank Trigg - Trigg too strong, Miller too sloppy. In first, Trigg outlanded Miller 40-4 in total strikes, including 29 from ground. Only a tolerant ref let fight continue into second round. The assault continued in round two, as Trigg outlanded Miller 36-7 in total strikes. Overall, Trigg had a 76-11 edge in total strikes landed.

Overview:

Shields has won 12 straight fights and has not lost in nearly five years. He's submitted six of his last seven opponents. In this battle of grapplers, the huge edge goes to Shields, unless Miller can take it into the late rounds and test Shields' sometimes questionable stamina.
