Couture-Franklin possible for summer UFC event
by Joe Rimmer on February 11, 2010

It seems that when Randy Couture said he wanted to fight as often as possible he wasn't kidding - if reports he is set to face Rich Franklin in June of this year are true.

Fresh off of his dominant victory over fellow Hall-of-Famer Mark Coleman, 46-year-old Couture is, according to Sherdog.com, in discussions to face the teacher turned fighter, Franklin.

It will make for an interesting match up between veterans as Couture looks to continue his rise up the ranks of the light heavyweight division, while Franklin makes the step up after fighting at 195 lbs for his last two bouts.

Franklin in particular will see this as a chance to get a victory over a huge name after a disappointing KO defeat to middleweight contender Vitor Belfort in his last outing.

Couture, 18-10, has two straight wins since his drop to 205, besting Brandon Vera before that showdown with Coleman. Franklin 26-5 comes off the back of that defeat to Belfort, and a close decision victory over 'The Axe Murderer', Wanderlei Silva.

UFC 115 is set to be held in Vancouver, and will most likely be headlined by a bout between another two UFC veterans, Ultimate Fighter coaches Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.

 |  (17) Comments Mtx: Hm, I really like Franklin, he seems like a really standup guy and cool as shit, so I'll probably be rooting for him. I also like Couture, but not so much. This fight is probably be just Couture pressing Rich to the cage and some boxing. Franklin is the better striker, so Randy won't risk it there. EverlastingSpringtime: I think Randy will have this fight, i wasn't overly impressed by franklin in his last fight. Maybe by decision but after randys last outing who knows... maybe he will finish franklin. This fight also has some 'old school' element in it, i would never have imagined this fight happening 5 years ago. I do like this match up, it should stir some debate. DragonWarrior: Franklin FTW Wandering_Minstrel: Couture via "smothered and covered". D_V: easy for randy. no Contest. Internet Tufguy: Rich should be able to put together a good game plan that will keep him off the fence, but I don't know if he can keep Randy from clinching and smothering him at some point. It looks good for Randy, but I don't know if it's as cut and dry as D_V thinks. Rich could land one on the button of Randy's weathered chin. toki candy: franklins 3rd rounds ko's HackBennys: This match seems pointless, like most of Couture's recent matches. I hope Franklin comes out the victor if it does happen, but I'm tired of seeing Randy's old ass in the cage. He's old and still in great shape, we get it UFC, we get it. The UFC's marketing of this geezer is actually getting older than Couture himself. The Hitman: this fight would mean nothing. a win wouldnt move a fighter any higher up the ladder, or at least it should. not saying it would be a bad fight, but its not an important fight whatsoever. they will make this out to be a "legend vs. legend" fight JujitsWho: I've wanted to see this fight for a LONG time. Ace should be able to counter Randys clinch as his is damn good too. I have a soft spot for Franklin. I really like that guy and I believe he has the skill to beat Couture. Some give Rich a hard time for maybe not being great, which is true, but he is still very good IMO. I'm going Rich in this one shawnb: I gotta soft spot for Rich too. I wouldn't bet on him though. I actaully think this fight is a real tough call
