The women's Strikeforce featherweight division is in a state of turmoil in light of its champion's, Cris "Cyborg" Santos, recent steroid use according to mmaweekly.com.
Santos will be stripped of her featherweight title after testing positive for steroid use in her last bout against Hiroko Yamanaka at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal. Her 16 second TKO victory over Yamanaka will be overturned into a no contest and is suspended for a year as well as being fined $2,500.
"We were going to hold that division and just do fights with Cyborg whenever there was a new contender. She's getting stripped of the belt. This pretty much kills the division," Dana White, UFC president, said.
Santos will likely appeal for her suspension but chances of it being overturned is unknown. Santos is widely regarded as the pound for pound best female fighter in MMA and the severity of her suspension cannot be overlooked.
Not only is the 145lb division likely to dissolve, Santos is one of the few faces of women's MMA and that image is now tarnished. The only other noticeable name is Gina Carano who is currently on an indefinite hiatus from the sport. Carano has not fought since late-2009, losing to Santos via TKO in the first round at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg. More recently, Carano is set to appear in an action-thriller movie, Haywire, scheduled to debut later this month.
