A shoulder injury has forced Strikeforce 145-pound women's champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos off of the promotion's upcoming "Fedor vs. Rogers" event on CBS in November.
News of the injury and Santos exit from the event came via Sherdog.com. Santos injured her shoulder while competing at the 2009 Abu Dhabi World Submission Grappling Championships at the end of last month in Barcelona, Spain.
According to the report, she will not need to get surgery for the injured shoulder but will have to undergo short rehabilitation for it.
In the submission tournament, Santos lost to Penny Thomas in the semifinals of the 2009 Abu Dhabi Combat Club in the women's +60 kg. weight class, but all was not lost as she finished in third place by defeating fellow Brazilian Rosângela Conceição.
Santos was rumored to defend her title for the first time against Marloes Coenen or Erin Toughill at the Nov. 7 event. She most recently extended her winning streak to eight and captured the newly created vacant women's title by defeating the very popular Gina Carano at Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" event in August.
"Cyborg" sports an overall MMA record of 8-1, with six of her wins coming via KO or TKO. She suffered her lone career loss in her MMA debut in May 2005, where she was defeated by Erica Paes at a Show Fight event in Brazil. The Chute Boxe product holds notable wins over the likes of Vanessa Porto, Shayna Baszler and Hitomi Akano.
Strikeforce has only officially announced one bout for the Nov. 7 card - the main event heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers. Strikeforce light-heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi is also expected to compete on the card in a non-title bout, however, an opponent has yet to be finalized for him.
Other bouts expected include a heavyweight bout between Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva, as well as a Strikeforce middleweight title bout between Jake Shields and Jason Miller.
