Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic recently revealed that his UFC 103 loss to Junior dos Santos hit him hard. So hard, in fact, that he had thoughts of suicide.
"I was very, very disturbed after the loss to dos Santos," Cro Cop told Croatian website Nokaut. "I was in such a state that I wished to hang myself in my hotel room so I would be gone. Three loses in my last seven fights is nothing but a disaster to me. That's a terrible score and I'm not happy about it."
Cro Cop admitted that he made mistakes while training for dos Santos, and even made mistakes during their bout. However, he believes that it was his motivation and his mindset that made his lose the fight. He said that he has looked into seeing a psychologist to help him sort out his problems.
Dos Santos won the bout in the third round after Cro Cop verbally submitted due to a knuckle to the eye that wrecked his vision.
After the loss, Cro Cop spoke about retirement. While he still had two fights left on his UFC contract, he wanted to stop fighting and get away from the sport. However, soon after, he changed his mind and decided that he would finish out his contract and compete in his last two fights.
"Fighting is my life and I don't know any other way to live," he said. "I am a fighter, and I will find the motivation and strength I need."
No date or opponent has been set for his next fight.
Cro Cop holds an MMA record of 25-7-2 (1 NC), and is most known for his powerful leg and body kicks. He has beaten many big names in the sport, such as Wanderlei Silva, Mark Coleman and Josh Barnett (x3). His most recent losses have come at the hands of dos Santos at UFC 103 in Sept. 2009, Cheik Kongo at UFC 75 in Sept. 2007, and Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 70 in April 2007.
