Cung Le in talks to return against Scott Smith at December's Strikeforce: "Evolution"
by Jacob Camargo on November 07, 2009

Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le has verbally agreed to face Scott Smith at Strikeforce: "Evolution" in December. News of the bout was first reported by MMAjunkie.com.

Le vacated the Strikeforce middleweight title in September and  never defended the belt since winning it. Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Jake Shields will be vying for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight title on the main card of tonight's Strikeforce:"Fedor vs. Rogers" event.

Le was thought to have been done fighting due to his desire to focus on his career in the film industry. He has not fought in over a year and half as he has been busy taking numerous movie roles, including a role in the big screen version of the popular video game "Tekken," a role in the movie "Fighting" and a role in the sci-fi thriller "Pandorum."

Le has not fought since capturing the Strikeforce middleweight title by defeating Frank Shamrock in March 2008. The 37-year-old has put together an undefeated 6-0 MMA record during his three-year professional MMA career, with all wins being with Strikeforce. All of his six wins have come via TKO or KO, and he holds notable career wins over UFC veterans Tony Fryklund, Jason Von Flue and Sam Morgan.

Smith (16-6) is coming off of a loss against Nick Diaz at June's Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" in a 180-lbs. catchweight bout. Prior to the loss, he had scored back-to-back knockout wins against the likes of Terry Martin and Benji Radach in his first two fights with Strikeforce.

Smith has fought for other notable promotions during his eight-year career such as the UFC, WEC, EliteXC and Gladiator Challenge. He has finished all 16 of his career wins, including 13 by TKO or KO and holds notable career wins over the likes of Tim Kennedy, Tim McKenzie and Pete Sell.

Strikeforce: "Evolution" was recently announced by the promotion, which will take place on Dec. 19 at the the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., and the event's main card will be televised live on Showtime.

The event is also expected to feature a bout between newly-signed middleweights Matt Lindland and Ronald Souza, as well as the anticipated debut of undefeated prospect Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal.

A main event is still being discussed for Strikeforce: "Evolution," and a proposed welterweight title bout between Nick Diaz and Jay Hieron has been ruled out as the possible headlining bout, according to a report from MMAjunkie.com.
