Cung Le nixes idea of joining heavily rumored Strikeforce middleweight tournament
by Jason Benfari on June 30, 2010

"You know tournaments, let those young guys do the tournaments. I'm 38 years old, and even though I looked 28 on Saturday, after I put that pizza, chocolate chips, and cookies in my stomach, I feel like a 38-year-old. I'm just happy that I'm with Strikeforce, and I'm happy that Scott Coker supported me in the 21 months that I had off. I want to sit down with Scott Coker and see what he has in store for me, but I definitely didn't take that much wear and tear in this fight, and you go through that tournament and you're fighting a lot. There's going to be a lot of wear and tear, and I'm not sure exactly what I want to do at this point." -Cung Le

Aging standout middleweight Cung Le was brilliant in a win over highly regarded Scott Smith last Saturday, but he doesn't plan to parlay that win into a spot on Strikeforce's rumored upcoming middleweight tournament.

With middleweight champion Jake Shields almost a certainty to bolt for the UFC, Strikeforce has held serious discussions about the possibility of holding a middleweight tournament to produce it's next champion.

Though he does plan on continuing to compete, Le will likely sit the tournament out to focus on various film projects and spend time with his family.

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Robbie Lawler, Tim Kennedy, Dan Henderson, Nick Diaz, and Jason "Mayhem" Miller, have all been rumored to be participating in the eight fighter tournament with the possible addition of Scott Smith, Kazuo Misaki, and Jorge Santiago for the tournament's final two spots.

 |  (7) Comments Masternate: yea tournaments are really hard on fighters, he would die. Wandering_Minstrel: Interesting proposal if it does come to fruition. The inner-UFC douchebag in me says that the idea is proof that Strikeforce is inferior based on its talent pool, but I think its cool that they're trying to develop a legit way to establish a MW champ. Cung is probably smart not to be a part of it; he is definitely getting too old. I personally think that he should quit doing movies if he plans on taking MMA seriously because as he pointed out, he's not getting any younger, and the talent pool is getting better. Rob: It's sad that nobody has talked about Cung Le's performance in his last fight. It's understandable, seeing as how Fedor lost, but Le was really impressive. He dominated Scott Smith, and won due to a spinning back kick. How awesome is that?
