A potential number one middleweight contender bout between Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt is being targeted by the UFC to headline its Nov. 14 event, UFC 105. News of the possible booking comes via MMAFanHouse.com.
UFC 105's vacant main event slot has been the subject of countless rumors, including possible match ups between Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo, Mike Swick and Matt Hughes and Dan Henderson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
If the Henderson vs. Marquardt bout comes to fruition, it would come as a bit of a surprise as Henderson has been adamant about his desire to face UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in his next fight or fighting at light-heavyweight if a fight with Silva can't be made. Marquardt has gone on to say that he would welcome a fight with Henderson if he isn't granted a title shot.
Henderson and Marquardt are arguably the two leading middleweight title contenders so the winner of their potential UFC 105 middleweight bout would likely earn the next crack at Silva. Both men previously lost to Silva, Marquardt at UFC 73 in July of 2007 and Henderson at UFC 82 in March of 2008.
In order for the Henderson vs. Marquardt bout to even be considered, Henderson, currently a free agent, must first re-sign with the UFC. Henderson's last bout with the UFC was in July at UFC 100, where he defeated Michael Bisping via second-round knockout. The win was his third straight, which includes previous wins over Rousimar Palhares and Rich Franklin. Henderson now sports a 5-2 record in seven fights with the UFC.
Henderson fought mostly in Japan during his 12-year career for Japanese promotions Pride and Rings. He holds notable wins in his career over Gilbert Yvel, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Renato Sobral, Kazuo Misaki, Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva.
Marquardt has won his past three bouts against the likes of Martin Kampmann, Wilson Gouveia and most recently Demian Maia. The longtime Pancrase veteran has put together an impressive 8-2 UFC record, with other big wins coming over Jeremy Horn and Dean Lister. His only other loss in the octagon came against Thales Leites in a highly controversial decision.
UFC 105 will be the promotion's return to the Manchester Evening News Arena in Manchester, England. The main card will be aired live on ESPN in the U.K. and via tape delay in the U.S. on Spike TV.
Other bouts to be featured on the main card include; Michael Bisping vs. Denis Kang, Dan Hardy vs. Dong Hyun Kim, James Wilks vs. Matt Brown and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will make his debut with the promotion against an, as of yet, unnamed opponent.
