UFC president Dana White, unhappy with Roy Nelson's recent performances, called a meeting to discuss his future. After the meeting, much is still uncertain.
Nelson's UFC career has been a roller coaster ride. The former IFL heavyweight champ won the 10th season of The Ultimate Fighter and his first two UFC fights with impressive knockouts. However, the once promising heavyweight has been dominated in his last two fights, losing both by unanimous decision.
After his loss to Frank Mir at UFC 130, which UFC President Dana White considered an "embarrassing" performance, White wished to hold a meeting "Big Country" to discuss his future with the promotion.
The prime concern for White appeared to be Nelson's level of fitness. Although it has become his trademark, Nelson's physique is causing the UFC to question how competitive he can be among stronger, more athletic, and better conditioned heavyweights.
Still, "Big Country" believes that the amount of body fat he carries is not an issue, citing his 6-1 championship run in the IFL and TUF 10 championship. Nelson had also claimed that he was very ill the week of the fight, and that was the main contributing factor for his poor cardio during the Mir fight.
White was not satisfied with this explanation.
"I don't not believe him," White told MMAJunkie.com. "I guess he had walking pneumonia, but Frank Mir did too. Frank Mir was sick that week too."
White is still calling for Nelson to meet with a nutritionist and is hopeful for a move down in weight class, but with Nelson seemingly opposed to such a move, one can only speculate what the future holds for his UFC career.
When asked if White is setting "intermediate goals" for Nelson, he only replied, "I don't know. We'll see what happens with Roy."
