Dana White eyes UFC 108 for Machida vs. Rua II
by Jason Benfari on October 27, 2009

According to noted MMA insider Dave Meltzer, UFC President Dana White has been highly active behind the scenes in attempting to put together a rematch of Saturday's highly controversial light-heavyweight contest between current light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and challenger Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Apparently, the UFC frontman has already approached both fighters about a Jan. 2/UFC 108 return engagement, with Rua already agreeing to the date. Machida, who is said to be nursing an injured hand, is still undecided about competing that soon, but has agreed to the rematch when he's healthy enough to compete.

Many fans and insiders were stunned when the judges rendered a 48-47 unanimous decision victory in favor of the champion last Saturday at UFC 104. The two Brazilians battled vehemently for five rounds in the promotions' main event with Rua seemingly outpointing Machida consistently. Exchanges were also mostly initiated mostly by Rua, making him the effective aggressor.

Machida counters that he had Rua hurt on two separate occasions during the fight and was never dazed in himself, stating that he believes he won 4 of the fights 5 rounds.

"I had the opportunity to see the fight again and I thought I won four rounds and Shogun took the last one," Machida told Sherdog.com. "Some people say he won the fourth and fifth round, but for sure I won at least the first three rounds. The American commentators were pretty much biased. If you see the fight without audio, you will probably see a different fight."

Machida's comments come on the heals of recent comments made by his good friend and teammate Anderson Silva who suggests that Machida won all 5 rounds.

Obviously, differing views are what make the sport great and debate about this fight can only help sell a rematch that now seemingly must happen. Here's to hoping there is a more definitive ending to their next encounter and that neither fighter has to leave it up to a fledgling MMA judging system still attempting to find its sealegs.

 |  (10) Comments alexbond: In the back of Machida's mind he knows what's coming in the rematch, and it's not good, for him at least. Little_Kang: fuck you dana white. IwishIwasMMA: in all seriousness, all three fighters are great. What is bad for both Anderson and Machida, is that they are both digging a very deep hole. Machida now has to fight Shogun again, and is losing fans because of his statements. Spidey, will more than likely not be able to dodge the bullet of Rua. Shogun will call him out and probably shut the MW up pretty handily. If anyone can beat Anderson in the stand up, its Shogun and Machida. At the same time, Anderson has ZERO chance of beating Shogun on the ground. Shoguns BJJ is so much more aggressive and intelligent. Something tells me if Machida says no to this title match, that Shoguns next fight will be Anderson, and it will be very VERY soon. Ceelarence: My money says Silva retires after Vitor is this is the case. Giada Esposito: It's amazing to me how down people are on Lyoto's and Anderson's fighting ability after UFC 104. I think Shogun won, but it was a good fight. Shogun will also probably win the rematch, but I wouldn't write off Machida just yet because you don't agree with judges' decision. He's quite capable of catching Shogun and finishing him, especially if Shogun comes in angry and is overly aggressive. And from what I've seen Anderson is a more dangerous striker than Lyoto, despite his comments about their sparring sessions. I think Shogun would take him down and beat him on the ground if they fought, but if the fight stayed standing I think Anderson would out strike him. For one thing, I don't think Shogun would have survived that clinch in round 1 if Anderson had been the one unloading knees on him. People are so pissed off about the fight decision that they're not being objective anymore.
