"Whoever came up with Houston Alexander's game plan ought to be kicked in the nuts for about five minutes. I don't know if his coaches came up with that or whatever, but not only did they give him the wrong game plan, they completely destroyed everything about Houston Alexander. It was making me sick. I don't know if Kalib Starnes trained him for that fight or what the deal was, but it was horrible. Kimbo was chasing him around the ring asking him to engage, trying to make it a fight and Houston didn't want to fight him. If we didn't cut him yet, we're cutting him - soon." - Dana White
UFC President Dana White confirms to MMA FanHouse that light-heavyweight Houston Alexander will be released from his contract with the promotion following his lack-luster unanimous decision loss to Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson at TUF 10 Finale last Saturday.
Many were expecting the Alexander vs. Slice bout to be a slug fest and thought that is would not make it out of the first round. However, Alexander shocked many with his strategy in the fight. Alexander was very tentative, at times passive in the fight, not his usual aggressive self, and did not use his explosive stand up game that he became known for in his first two fights in the UFC. Numerous times during the fight, Alexander would circle around the Octagon, throwing soft leg kicks.
Alexander was a feel good story and generated a lot of positive mainstream press, as he is a single father of six children who donated a kidney to one of his kids. When not fighting, he is a hip-hop DJ and a public speaker.
Prior to the loss against Sllice, Alexander was granted approval by the UFC to take a fight outside of the promotion, where he defeated Sherman Pendergarst via first-round TKO at Adrenaline IV in September.
Alexander leaves the promotion with a 2-4 UFC record. He opened up his UFC career by scoring impressive back-to-back first-round TKO wins over Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara. Alexander exits the UFC losing four straight UFC fights against Thiago Silva, James Irvin, Eric Schafer and Slice.
Alexander has put together an overall MMA record of 9-5 since turning pro in June 2001. The Extreme Challenge veteran has finished six of his nine career wins by TKO or KO and holds notable wins over the likes of Brandon Quigley and Jon Murphy.
