With a bill allowing MMA events in Massachusetts expected to be signed into effect in early 2010, the UFC is already planning to take the organization to Boston.
UFC President Dana White, a Boston native, had always expressed his wishes to do an event in his home state, but could not accomplish the task due to state laws. But now that the laws are changing, White is intent on making Boston a UFC venue in the summer of 2010.
"It's going to be the best show ever," White said to MMAJunkie Radio. "I'm so excited for it."
White stated that Fenway Park and TD Garden (Boston Garden) are both being looked at as potential venues for the state's first event. In recent years, Fenway Park changed its layout and now has the capacity to hold approximately 40,000 people. TD Garden has an indoor 19,600-seat arena, which underwent renovations three and a half years ago.
"We're not going to do one fight there," White said about future events in the state. "We'll be coming back. You've got Fenway Park and the Garden. It's awesome."
Although a date has not been finalized, the UFC is looking into the details of the event already.
The state bill that will be signed into effect in early 2010 will expand the Massachusetts State Boxing Commission into a greater athletic commission. This will allow for MMA events to be overseen by the commission and take place in Massachusetts.
