Dana White on signing James Toney: "I don’t know why I did it."
by Natalia Baage on March 24, 2010

Boxing veteran James Toney is in the UFC, and fans are wondering why. Apparently, so is President Dana White.

Earlier today in the UFC 111 pre-fight press conference, White was asked about Toney's future with the organization, and who the ex-boxer could possibly fight.

"People keep asking me what's next for him, who's he gonna fight," said White. "I have no idea. We did this deal and now I gotta figure out what I'm gonna do with him and how I'm gonna do this thing."

At UFC 108, which took place in early January, Toney wasn't shy about tracking White down and trying to persuade him for a chance to fight in the Octagon. White at first seemed hesitant about considering Toney's request, but after the recent signing, many are wondering what made White change his mind.

"To be honest," White continued, "I don't know why I did it... There's been this whole boxing versus mixed martial arts thing forever," White said, addressing the difference between the sports.

Can boxers beat mixed martial artists? Can a boxer translate into the Octagon? White has previously stated that he did not want to sign Toney because Toney had no MMA experience or training. White has been a long-time critic of making the UFC a "freak show," and he works hard at trying to combat this thought process. After Strikeforce's recent signing of Herschel Walker, White publicly said that the decision was "ridiculous."

"We were sitting in my office one day," White said of a meeting with Toney, "and he said: 'I'm a proud guy. I'm proud of what I accomplished. I came from nothing... I'd never do anything to embarrass myself and my family. I know a lot more then you think I know.'"

But as of early-March, Toney had yet to begin sparring - only learning the basics from trainer Juanito Ibarra. While Toney does not have an upcoming bout scheduled, it is very possible that he will rely on his fists to win the fight.

White added that he does not condone Toney calling out current UFC fighters - like Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Kimbo Slice and Brock Lesnar - saying that he'd beat them in a bout.
