Is Brock Lesnar too big? UFC President Dana White says no, and that the heavyweight champion is a legitimate size for that division. The UFC will not have a +265-lbs. weight class.
"The reality is, Brock Lesnar is a real heavyweight," White told fans at the UFC Expo.
He quickly shot down any idea of a super-heavyweight division in the UFC, stating that there just aren't enough fighters to create that weight class.
If fighters like Lesnar and Shane Carwin are legitimate 265-ers, should a cruiserweight division be implemented so that smaller heavyweights, like Randy Couture, can compete with other fighters of a similar weight?
When Couture took on Lesnar for the heavyweight belt in November 2008, their size difference was clearly visible. Couture, who usually walks around at 220-230 lbs. did not need to cut weight for the fight, and fought at the same weight. However, Lesnar, who walks around at 280-290 lbs. cut to 265 lbs. to make weight, and then gained some back before entering the Octagon.
With Lesnar, then, being the right size for a legit heavyweight, and many heavyweight fighters fighting under the maximum weight limit, will another division be added to MMA organizations? In recent times, rumors have circulated about the need for one - most likely a 225 lbs. or 230 lbs. weight class - but no official word or thoughts have come from any officials.
"We're just getting to the point now where the heavyweight division is probably the best it's ever been in UFC history," said White. "More and more guys keep popping up. And as the sport continues to grow and keeps getting bigger, you're going to see bigger guys that would have played other sports get involved in mixed martial arts."
