Dana White talks UFC's ban on weapons-related sponsors
by Hubert Lau on January 27, 2012

UFC president, Dana White, spoke about the UFC's recent ban on weapons related sponsors according to mmaweekly.com.

Despite early claims, White says the ban resulted from the promotion's continued growth internationally and is not influenced by its partnership with Fox.

"It wasn't necessarily a Fox decision...The reality of it is we're going into other countries now. If you're sitting in China, you want to see a United States Marine commercial? Holy (expletive), no! It's all part of the growing pains of building a business like this and building the sport," White said.

Sponsorship banning is nothing new in the UFC. Not long ago, in 2010, the UFC banned Good4U since it was a direct competitor to the Zuffa-owned Xenergy. In terms of public image, Condom Depot was  dropped as a sponsor in late 2009 due to the subject matter.

"I don't know what the big deal is. I know that some of the fighters get affected by it, but it is what it is," White said.

Among those affected are Martin Kampmann and Cody McKenzie who were both sponsored by The Gun Store.

If you're a US company and you're afraid to promote the Marines because someone might be offended in another country, you should take some time out, read a little history, and then go and give one of our service men or women a big hug and say "Thank you" for what they have done for this country. I was upset about this decision before, but I'm FURIOUS now after reading that explanation. And before anyone asks me, if a foreign fighter wanted to be sponsored by his or her armed forces, OF COURSE I don't care, it's their right as a citizen of that country. I really hope this gets our veterans and service members fired up. mike5k: I don't agree with this either but I'm going to be completely honest. If Zuffa allowed just any sponsors that would write a check then people (not YOU people, but people in general) would say they're greedy and they'll make money any way they can. While I think this ban is wrong and actually pretty unnecessary, I do like that it shows they're interested in their image as well as they're bank accounts. I just don't see how it helps their image. 0311USMC: So you would deny furthering Marine Corps recruiting for the benefit of making money from a communist country like China? F YOU right in the face ZUFFA. All this shows is the exact OPPOSITE of what, I think it was Mike, said. It shows that ALL they are worried about is putting more money in their pockets and not caring where it came from. The United States military is the one who fights for your liberties and the Chinese would love to take them from you, yet you are catering to them?? Thats a crock of horse manure. seedheadondatrak: Mixed feelings. i understand trying to break into new markets, but DONT EVER, EVER STOP SUPPORTING YOUR OWN MILITARY!!!!!!! GO HARD: Make love, not war. q: )
