UFC President, Dana White, held his much anticipated press conference today, announcing what "he says" will shake-up the world of mixed martial arts forever. Although the press conference didn't go according to plan, FiveKnuckles.com has learned that after several attempts to sign the biggest free agent in MMA, Fedor Emelianenko, the deal is unlikely to happen at this time as the two sides are still negotiating.
According to Dana White, even "the most amazing" deal was simply not enough for what many consider the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
"I've said many times that my job as a promoter and as the President of this company is to bring the fans not only the best fights in the world, but the best fighters in the world, and more importantly, the fights the fans want to see," said Dana White. "We tried everything that we could possibly do to get Fedor into the UFC - we went above and beyond. I have been able to sign the best fighters in the world over the last ten years into the UFC. We came to the table willing to give up just about anything except co-promotion. I guarantee that he will not be offered another deal like this in mixed martial arts. For whatever reason, they did not want to sign a deal with the UFC. "
"I was so confident this was gonna happen," White continued. "I went into this thing with the attitude that we're gonna make it happen. The fans really want to see this fight (Brock Lesnar vs Fedor), I want to see how good this guy really is against the best in the world, so let's do this thing. It didn't happen. But if they want to make a deal, they can call me right now and we can do it."
Despite the failure to sign Emelianenko, Dana White confirmed that Tito Ortiz will return to the octagon and is in talks to face Mark Coleman. Dan Henderson was pulled from his rematch with Rich Franklin and will get the first shot at Anderson Silva's belt middleweight belt as we reported earlier and Vitor Belfort will replace Henderson against Rich Franklin at UFC 103 in Dallas. As reported by FiveKnuckles.com earlier this week, the UFC signed a major television deal with ESPN in the UK.
White announced that in addition to Belfort, former Affliction fighters Dan Lauzon, Ben Rothwell, Chase Gormley, Rafaello Oliveira, and Paul Daley will all be coming to the UFC in the near future. The WEC will welcome Javier Vazquez, Mark Hominick and LC Davis, and White said that talks are continuing with other undisclosed fighters on the defunct promotion's roster.
