Daniel Cormier and Shane del Rosario were initially set to meet in a heavyweight showdown at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum on June 18.
Del Rosario was involved in a car wreck that has left him unable to perform. A drunk driver collided with del Rosario's car while it was sitting stationary at a red light. The undefeated heavyweight prospect's future within the sport is also in jeopardy due the injuries he sustained. Colin Oyama, del Rosario's training partner, believes that more will be known about the situation in six months.
With Del Rosario out of the fight fans were left to wonder if Cormier would remain on the card. While nothing has officially been confirmed, a listing on the Showtime Sport's page for the event lists Cormier vs. Monson. The listing can be seen in the bottom right hand corner of the webpage.
If the fight is indeed going down on June 18, it would provide a huge step up for Cormier. The former Olympic wrestler is undefeated during his career with victories over Devin Cole, Soa Palelei and Tony Johnson. Cormier trains out of AKA with UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and has shown vastly improved striking throughout his seven fight professional career.
Monson, a 53 fight veteran, has competed across the globe in a plethora of organizations. The American Top Team fighter has fought for the UFC, Dream, Bitetti Combat, Sengoku and Pride. A gifted grappler, the stocky Monson is well known for his north-south choke.
