The UFC continues its late 2009 roster cuts, as heavyweight Darrill Schoonover, as well as welterweights Kevin Burns, Edgar Garcia and lightweight Shane Nelson, are the latest to be released from their contracts following recent losses.
News of the latest UFC releases was first reported by MMASurvival.com.
According to the report, the UFC also confirmed the previously reported releases of Justin Wren and Houston Alexander. In addition, TUF 10 cast member and former NFL player Marcus Jones was also cut from the UFC. Jones has since retired from MMA.
There has been a long list of fighter cuts by the UFC in recent months, which includes Denis Kang, Brock Larson, Jake Rosholt, Roli Delgado, Jason Dent and Josh Neer.
Nelson began his career as a cast member on TUF 8. He opened his UFC career with back-to-back wins over George Roop in his official UFC debut, and Aaron Riley at UFC 96 in March. Nelson exits the UFC with two straight losses against Aaron Riley and most recently Matt Wiman at UFC 107 earlier this month. Nelson has competed for other notable promotions over his five-year career such as X-1 and Rumble on the Rock. He sports a 12-5 MMA record and holds notable career wins over the likes of Kaleo Kwan and Harris Sarmiento.
Burns has lost three straight bouts inside the Octagon against the likes of Anthony Johnson, Chris Lytle and, most recently, T.J. Grant at UFC 107 on Dec. 12. He exits the UFC with a 2-3 record, winning his first two fights with the promotion against Roan Carneiro (in his UFC debut) and Anthony Johnson. Prior to coming to the UFC, Burns fought for other organizations such as Victory Fighting Championship and Glory Fighting Championships. He has put together a 7-4 MMA record over his three-year career. Burns has finished all of his seven career wins and holds a notable career win over Strikeforce vet Bobby Voelker.
Garcia's UFC career was short lived, as he went 0-2 with the promotion, suffering losses inside the Octagon against Brad Blackburn and, most recently, against DaMarques Johnson at UFC 107. The Total Combat veteran won the first seven bouts of his career prior to joining the UFC, which included a first-round knockout win over Hiromitsu Miura at WEC 38. He has finished all but one of his seven career wins, including five coming by TKO or KO.
In addition, Darrill Schoonover was released following a loss in his official UFC debut against James McSweeney at TUF 10 finale on Dec. 5. He was a cast member on the 10th season of The Ultimate Fighter, going 1-1 during the season. He defeated Zak Jensen, but went on to lose to Marcus Jones via first-round knockout in the quarterfinals. Schoonover, who is a corporal in the United States Army, was called back to service and returned to active duty following the fight with McSweeney. Schoonover has put together a nearly flawless 10-1 MMA record since turning pro in January 2008. The Xtreme Fighting Championships, Art of War, and Shark Fights veteran has finished all of his 10 career wins and holds notable career wins over the likes of George Paz and Rex Richards.
