Diego Sanchez moving back up to welterweight
by Giada Esposito on January 19, 2010

When the night ended for Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez at UFC 107, the lightweight title challenger known for his indomitable entrance chant of "Yes!" found that his destiny as champ at lightweight had been reduced to a single word.

No.

After the doctor interceded and stopped the fight in the fifth round, the fact that Sanchez was bleeding in an upright rather than a horizontal position was more a testament to Sanchez's toughness than a measure of how badly he had just been beaten. In stark contrast, reigning champion BJ Penn, who had just finished imposing his will on the Nightmare for the past 20 minutes, looked fresh enough to have traded his trunks for a suit and gone to a wedding service.

It was a disappointing loss for Sanchez, marking only the third time in 24 fights he had failed to have his hand raised at the end of a bout. Despite the disappointment, fans had looked forward to seeing him in more exciting lightweight match-ups, but Sanchez has now confirmed on his Twitter account that he is moving back to the familiar territory of the welterweight division.

"YES IM GOING BACK TO WELTERWEIGHT," Diego tweeted. "IM LOVING MY NEW DIET. I WANT KOS OR FITCH BUT ANY TOP GUY WILL DO JUST WANT TO GIVE U FANS THE BEST FIGHT"

Sanchez followed that up with a message to Nate Diaz, who is also moving up to fight at 170 after losing a split decision to Gray Maynard at Ultimate Fight Night 20.

"I agree you got robbed...," Sanchez stated. "I hear your going up to 170 too i would love to welcome you to welterweight lets make it happen."

So far no match-up or date of return has been announced for "The Nightmare", although Diaz appears set to face Rory Markham at UFC 111.

Sanchez began his stint in the UFC at middleweight when he defeated Kenny Florian by first-round TKO to win the Ultimate Fighter 1 middleweight finale. But after that match he dropped down to compete in the welterweight division.

He saw a fine run of success at 170-pounds, putting together a streak of five straight wins before dropping back-to-back decisions to welterweight standouts Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch. Though Sanchez came back from these losses to notch a pair of wins at the weight, it seemed that they had galvanized him towards a move to lightweight and he made his 155-pound debut at UFC 95 with a victory over the always-tough Joe Stevenson.

It took Sanchez just one more fight, a split-decision win over Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 9 finale that saw him take home "Fight of the Night" honors, to earn his first UFC title shot.
