Diego Sanchez vs. Paulo Thiago likely for UFC 121
by Jacob Camargo on July 21, 2010

A welterweight bout between "The Ultimate Fighter" season one winner Diego Sanchez (21-4) and Paulo Thiago (13-2) is expected to take place at UFC 121 on October 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Sanchez broke the news to PennyJoMMA.com on Facebook. He also revealed that he has moved back to New Mexico and now trains at Albuquerque Kickboxing & Mixed Martial Arts, which is not affiliated with Greg Jackson.

Sanchez is currently on a two-fight losing streak, suffering losses to B.J. Penn in a UFC lightweight title bout and most recently John Hathaway at UFC 114 in May in what was his return to the 170-pound welterweight division. Prior to the losses, he won four straight bouts, including wins in his first two fights as a lightweight against Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida.

Sanchez has put together a solid 10-4 UFC record during his five-year tenure with the promotion, scoring other notable Octagon wins over the likes of Kenny Florian, Nick Diaz, John Alessio, Karo Parisyan and Joe Riggs.

Thiago is coming off an unanimous decision loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC 115 last month. He previously won back-to-back fights over Jacob Volkmann and Mike Swick.

Thiago now sports a 3-2 UFC record, scoring a shocking upset win over Josh Koscheck in his Octagon debut at UFC 95 last February, which was then followed by his first career loss in his second Octagon appearance against Koscheck's teammate Jon Fitch at UFC 100 in July.

Though not officially announced yet, UFC 121 will likely be headlined by a UFC heavyweight title bout between current champion Brock Lesnar and top contender, Cain Velasquez.

 |  (17) Comments Mrt2006: I hope for a standup war ... War Diego! Diego has definitely the skills to bet thiago, but he has to keep his hands up ;) I like this matchup, hopefully the way back to the top of the division. Bloodbath: Good match up. Tough one to call. They both lost their last fight. Both are well rounded. I can see this being a war. Looks like this could be a pretty good card. Little_Kang: simply can't cheer for Diego WAR PAULO GO HARD: hope diego looks better in this one... IwishIwasMMA: I am giving this to Paulo. Although Diego has the wrestling advantage and could LNP a victory because judges are fucking retarded, I believe Paulo is the more well rounded fighter. If he hits Diego he can hurt him badly. snuff: Diego goes to sleep standing. Diego can also go to sleep on the ground. :D mmakillsallothersports: Paulo thiago will smash his ugly mug Wandering_Minstrel: I will say that Diego's psyche out bullshit isn't going to work with Paulo Thiago. That man deals with Brazilian crack-dealing crime bosses for a living. Castle: Not really a huge fan of either fighter so I don't really have a favorite to win but I have a "feeling" (in my pants) that Diego will take this one. I think he has a a lot more to prove and will be ready for Paulo. Hopefully I'm wrong and Paulo KO's the weirdo. War whomever! horizontalcracker: I think Thiago takes this, he probably won't finish Diego because Diego can take a pounding, much like JJW. Mtx: I'm taking Paulo on this one as well. Both guys have been pretty much exposed in their last fight, so I think both of them will come with something to prove. Diego's freak show has prove to be innefective now so he will have to bring some skill to the table this time around wich I don't think he will.
