Coming on the heals of the announcement that MMA superstar Urijah Faber will storm headfirst into the WEC's bantamweight division when he squares off against Takeya Mizugaki in August, WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has confirmed that he will rematch Faber-protege Joseph Benavidez at the same event in his first title defense.
"Its official peeps," Cruz exclaimed. "Me vs benavidez again! I'm pumped! And will b more than ready to defend MY belt!"
Cruz (15-1) defeated former champion Brian Bowles in March to take the title after earning a unanimous decision victory over Benavidez the fight before in a wild back-and-forth affair which saw both men push an exhausting pace.
Of note, Cruz's only loss was to the aforementioned newly-minted bantamweight, Faber.
Joseph Benavidez (12-1), who actively trains with Faber, is looking to exact revenge on the only man to hand him a loss in his highly impressive MMA career. After taking his lumps against Cruz, Benavidez has looked nothing short of spectacular in big-time wins over highly-regarded Rani Yahya (TKO) and former bantamweight stalwart and pound-for-pound great Miguel Torres.
Cruz-Benavidez II will likely headline the yet unannounced WEC 50 event on Aug. 18 alongside Faber's debut against Takeya. A Benavidez win coupled with success for both he and Faber could create an interesting logjam at bantamweight as both fighters train together and are said to be very close.
