Dustin Hazelett steps in to face Paul Daley at UFC 108
by Jacob Camargo on December 10, 2009

Up-and-coming welterweight Dustin Hazelett will fill in for the injured Carlos Condit and face heavy-handed Brit Paul Daley at UFC 108 on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. News of the bout was first reported by MMAWeekly.com.

Former WEC welterweight champion, Condit, was forced out of the bout against Daley after he reportedly sliced his hand open on a piece of sheet metal, including cutting "one finger down to the bone."

The bout between Condit and Daley was expected to be featured as UFC 108's co-headliner and the bout's status will likely not change with the news of Hazelett replacing Condit.

The Hazelett vs. Daley bout fits the mold of a classic "Striker vs. Grappler" match up. Daley fits the "Striker" portion, having finished 17 of his 22 career wins by TKO or KO and Hazelett is the obvious "Submission" counterpart, as he has finished nine of his 12 career wins by submission.

Hazelett was set to make his Octagon return against Karo Parisyan at UFC 106 on Nov. 21, however, Parisyan pulled out of the fight two days before the event, which led to his banishment from the UFC. It is not yet known why Parisyan pulled out, however, some have speculated that his addiction to painkillers played a big role. Hazelett was scratched from the card altogether but the UFC still paid him his base salary plus a win bonus.

Hazelett (12-4) has won his last two bouts but has not fought since UFC 91 in Nov. 2008, where he defeated Tamdan McCrory. He was originally expected to fight Ben Saunders at UFC 96 in March, however, he suffered a torn ACL while training for the bout. He had successful surgery to repair the serious knee injury, and had been sidelined rehabbing the damaged joint.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist has put together a 5-2 UFC record, with other notable wins over Jonathan Goulet and Josh Burkman. The King of the Cage and Extreme Challenge veteran holds other notable wins over his five-year career over the likes of Jason Ireland and Chad Reiner.

Daley (22-8-2) is currently riding a three-fight winning streak, most recently notching an impressive first-round TKO win over Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut in September at UFC 103.

Prior to joining the UFC, Daley fought all over the UK, as well as recently fighting in North America, where he has fought for Strikeforce, EliteXC and MFC. However, he has fought a good portion of six-year career with the Cage Rage promotion. Daley holds notable career wins over the likes of Xavier Foupa-Pokam, Jess Liaudin, Duane Ludwig and John Alessio.

Headlining UFC 108 is a light-heavyweight bout between former UFC light-heavyweight title-holder Rashad Evans and 14-1 American Top Team Fighter, Thiago Silva.
