Early Lesnar-Fedor odds miss the mark
by Ben Zeidler on July 29, 2009

With impending press conferences being held by both Fedor Emelianenko and the UFC's Dana White, it's not hard to see the writing on the walls. Within just a few days, the greatest heavyweight of all time (yes he is, don't even bother) should be signed to the greatest fighting organization of all time. Of course, with Fedor's past, I won't believe it until the bell rings. However, that hasn't stopped Vegas oddsmakers from being the first to opine on the potential fight.

They've started the line at -225 for Fedor and +185 for Brock. To the uninitiated, those lines mean that to make $1 on Fedor, you would have to bet $2.25. In comparison, a $1 bet on Brock would win you $1.85. Fedor's -225 puts him at about a 70% chance to win.

Clearly, these oddsmakers haven't seen much of Lesnar. I too expect Fedor to win because well, after all, he's Fedor. But this doesn't mean that Brock can't hold his own in there. The big man has a number of things working to his advantage.

First, he's bigger. A lot bigger. Fedor has that old man strength but Brock is entirely another animal. He held one of the greatest heavyweight wrestlers ever (Couture) down to the ground as though his opponent was a child. Second, Brock's been busy while Fedor has had just a few fights, all short in length and with tons of layoff in between. As a result, Brock should be comfortable springing back into action. Third, Brock has more to gain. Fedor is already #1, both currently and all time. He's beaten the legends, from Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to Mirko Filipovic. Meanwhile, Brock is coming off the greatest villain performance since "The Dark Knight." He's proven he belongs in the UFC. However, he still has to show that he's got the skills (not just the strength) to be one of the greats.

With all these advantages in place, should fans expect Brock Lesnar to knock off Fedor Emelianenko? No, of course not. Nevertheless, the fight fans see should be closer than the 70-30 split some oddsmakers are predicting.
