With James Irvin injured, the Ultimate Fighter season 3 middleweight runner-up Ed Herman will likely step in to replace him and meet Wilson Gouveia at UFC 102. The event takes place on August 29 from the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon. The news comes courtesy of Sherdog.com
If the fight goes down as expected, Herman will be Gouveia's third opponent for the event. Chael Sonnen was originally supposed to face him, however, he was taken off the bout to face Dan Miller at UFC 98 in May. Gouveia's second opponent James Irvin withdrew from the bout due to a severe knee injury he suffered in training.
Herman was scheduled to take on Aaron Simpson at UFN 19 on September 16, however, its unlikely that he'll partake in that bout now. The UFC has yet to confirm any of these changes.
Gouveia (12-6) is coming off a loss against Nate Marquardt at UFC 95 in February. Prior to the loss, he had won two straight over Ryan Jensen and Jason MacDonald. Since his June 2006 inception in the UFC, Gouveia has put together a 6-3 record with the promotion. Out of his 12 career wins, 4 have come by TKO or KO and 7 by submission. He holds a notable win outside the UFC over Jon Fitch.
Herman possibly saved his job in the UFC with a win in his last over David Loiseau at UFC 97 in April. Prior to the win, he had lost two straight against Demian Maia and Alan Belcher. Herman sports a even 4-4 record with the UFC, with other wins over Scott Smith and Joe Doerksen. Over his six-year career, he's put together a 15-7 MMA record, with 13 of his wins coming via stoppage. He holds other notable wins over Cory Devela, Glover Teixeira, Dave Menne and Nick Thompson.
UFC 102 is headlined by a heavyweight bout between former UFC heavyweight champions Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Also in action, Keith Jardine will take on Thiago Silva in a crucial light-heavyweight bout and Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt will duel in a middleweight bout with possible title implications.
