Eddie Alvarez vs. Michael Chandler at Bellator 54
by Hubert Lau on July 28, 2011

Bellator's lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez, is booked to defend his title against Michael Chandler at Bellator 54 according to mmaweekly.com.

Alvarez (22-2) is one of the most recognizable names and faces in the Bellator's roster. Alvarez defended his title successfully against Pat Curran at Bellator 39 and is riding a seven fight win streak, establishing himself among MMA's top lightweight talent.

"I watched the Lightweight Tournament very closely, and was really impressed with a lot of the competition. Knowing that Chandler is my opponent, I've already gone back and started to watch film, and I'll be ready. He brings a really good pace, and it's going to be a great fight." Alvarez said.

Contesting Alvarez for his title is the undefeated Chandler (8-0). Utilizing his wrestling and his ever improving striking abilities, Chandler might be Alvarez's stiffest test to date. Training out of Xtreme Couture, Chandler defeated Marcin Held, Lloyd Woodard and Patricky Freire in Bellator's latest lightweight tournament to earn a shot at the lightweight gold.

"Eddie is obviously a world class lightweight, but in a lot of the fights I have watched, no one has really pushed the pace against him. I want to put him on his heels, and make him respond to what I'm doing in the cage. I've got a few months to prepare, and I'll be more than ready for Oct. 15." Chandler said.

Bellator 54 is scheduled for October 15 at Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Looks like Eddie will beat another unranked fighter to keep his "Top LW" status. ;) It is frustrating for me because Eddie seems to have all the tools to truly be a great LW Champion, but if he keeps fighting in the minor leagues, against sub par competition, we will never get to see his full potential unleashed. From a fan standpoint, he made a poor choice going to Bellator. I'm sure it was the best one for him and hi$ family, but I want to see him tested. /rant Hizoka: its amazing to me that people can get a top rank without ever fighting or beating a top rank fighter... i know Eddie is a good fighter... but you cannot be on of the best if you never fought one of the best you also cannot go up in rank by fighting unranked guys... you are supposed to beat guys below you its not supposed to improve your rank...
