Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez was supposed to face Michael Chandler this weekend at Bellator 54 in Atlantic City. An injury to the champ pushed it back indefinitely but now it's been signed again and will take place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Alvarez is widely considered to be the top lightweight outside of Zuffa. He's won seven consecutive fights and 12 of his last 13. He won Bellator's first lightweight tournament in 2009 and has defended his title once, a unanimous decision over Pat Curran in April of this year. He's also emerged victorious in two non-title fights with Bellator. Former UFC fighters Roger Huerta and Josh Neer were both dominated and finished by the native of Philadelphia.
Chandler is a former Division I All-American wrestler. He's undefeated in nine pro fights, including his wins in the Bellator tournament that lead to his title shot. He competed in Strikeforce's Challenger series before entering the Bellator bracket where he upset "Pitbull" Patricky Freire in the finals.
An interesting side note to this contest is that Chandler trains at Xtreme Couture where Gray Maynard trains. Alvarez does some of his training at Ricardo Almeida's jiu-jitsu academy with Frankie Edgar. Maynard and Edgar have fought three times with Edgar recently recording a 4th round TKO and retaining his UFC lightweight title.
