Top ranked female fighter Marloes Coenen's new opponent for Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Rogers" is set. The Dutch-born fighter will now face Roxanne Modafferi in a women's fight set for the preliminary portion of the card. News of the bout was first reported by MMAWeekly.com.
Coenen's original opponent for the event, Erin Toughill, was forced off the event due to yet unknown "medical reasons."
The winner of the Coenen vs. Modafferi bout could be next in line for a shot at Strikeforce women's 145 pound champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos.
Modafferi and Coenen are no strangers to each other as they previously fought in the finals of a same-night eight-woman tournament at K-GRACE 1 in May 2007. Modafferi walked away with a split decision victory over Coenen.
Modafferi (13-4) will be moving up from her usual fighting weight of 135 pounds to fight Coenen at 145 lbs. She is currently riding an six-fight winning streak, however, hasn't fought since defeating Chisa Yonezawa in November 2008.
During her six year career, Modafferi has competed for such notable promotions as MFC, MARS, Ring of Combat and Smackgirl. She holds notable career wins over Megumi Yabushita and Vanessa Porto.
Coenen (16-3) is coming off a loss against Cindy Dandois at a Beast of the East event in January. Prior to the loss, she won three straight fights, all coming via stoppage. The Smackgirl veteran has been competing professionally for nine years and has finished 14 of her 16 career wins including 11 by submission.
The Nov. 7 Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Rogers" event takes place at the Sears Centre near Chicago, Illnois and will be televised live on CBS. The event is headlined by a heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers. Also slated for the event, Jake Shields and Jason "Mayhem" Miller will meet for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight belt and UFC and Pride veteran Sokoudjou faces Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi in a non-title fight.
