When the cage door shuts behind Evan Dunham at UFC Fight Night 20, he'll be competing for the fourth time in the past twelve months. The aggressive 28-year-old is undefeated at 9-0, and made his UFC debut last February with a win over Per Eklund.
The native of Eugene, Oregon looked outstanding picking up a split decision victory over veteran Marcus Aurelio in his last outing at UFC 102 in front of his hometown crowd in Portland. That victory shot Dunham onto the lightweight scene and put him in a position to compete in the co-main event of the first UFC event to hit the state of Virginia.
This Monday night, he looks to further his career against the lightweight winner of the Ultimate Fighter season 8, Efrain Escudero. Tommy Kail of FiveKnuckles.com checks in with Evan as he makes his final preparations for Monday night.
FiveKnuckles.com: I don't know how you feel about this, but I tried to get an interview with Efrain Escudero a couple weeks ago and he stiffed me.
Evan Dunham: (Laughs) Oh really?
FiveKnuckles.com: Yeah, so everybody at FiveKnuckles.com is jumping on the Evan Dunham bandwagon. I hope that's not too much pressure.
Evan Dunham: (Laughs) Ok, I'll see what I can do.
FiveKnuckles.com: All jokes aside, we respect all fighters equally and think nothing but the best of Escudero. I see you're from Eugene, Oregon. How about those [Oregon] Ducks this year?
Evan Dunham: Yeah, they did alright. They took a couple tough losses. We were all hoping for them to pull through in Pasadena, but they came up a little short. Overall it was a good year, especially in Chip Kelly's first season so he's got a lot to look forward to.
FiveKnuckles.com: What about that Oregon/Oregon State rivalry, it gets pretty nasty from what I've heard.
Evan Dunham: I think it's a healthy rivalry. I actually graduated from Oregon and my brother went to Oregon State so I know firsthand it's as good a rivalry as any. In Oregon, there really isn't much to do so we're pretty passionate about our sports.
FiveKnuckles.com: So you come from a divided household with you being a Duck and your brother a Beaver. Is there ever any tension between you two? It probably wouldn't be a good idea for him to take a swing at you?
Evan Dunham: (Laughs) No, no. Not at all. He's from Eugene too. He spent most of his life there so he just flips back and forth between the two teams. If the Beavers aren't playing the Ducks, I want the Beavers to win and he's the same way.
FiveKnuckles.com: So have you relocated permanently to Las Vegas yet?
Evan Dunham: I haven't yet. I'm actually in the process of tying up a few ends before I can stay down here. I'm hoping to be in Vegas full time for my next fight camp, but I'm not dealing with that right now. I only got one thing on my mind and that's winning my next fight.
FiveKnuckles.com: Well, when you get down here, don't bet on Oregon State. They blew it last week against BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl, but I'm not here to give you any bad ideas about betting or anything like that.
