A middleweight bout between IFL veteran Tim Kennedy and hard-hitting Chute Boxe fighter, Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, will headline the next Strikeforce Challengers event in September. Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz confirmed the news with MMAjunkie.com today.
The event will take place on September 25 from the SpiritBank Event Center in Bixby, Oklahoma, which contradicts the original rumored location of Fresno, California. A lightweight bout between Jorge Gurgel and Billy Evangelista was originally slated to headline the event, however, there is no word if the bout will still appear on the card.
Kennedy is riding a two fight win streak, with his most recent coming in his Strikeforce debut against Nick Thompson in June. Prior to his consecutive wins, Kennedy was defeated by Jason "Mayhem" Miller at HDNet Fights: "Reckless Abandon" in December 2007. Of 10 career fights, 9 have come via stoppage and Kennedy holds notable wins over the likes of Dante Rivera, Ryan McGivern and Jason Miller.
Santos hasn't fared well as of late losing four of his last five fights. He most recently lost in his Strikeforce debut against Joey Villasenor on the same Strikeforce Challengers event that Kennedy was victorious on. The 12 year veteran has finished 14 of his 16 career wins, including 9 by TKO or KO.
Santos has competed for numerous promotions in his long career such as Jungle Fight, Pancrese, Sengoku, Strikeforce, PRIDE and Cage Rage.
