TUF 10 fighter Justin Wren may only be 22-years-old, but he's got experience well beyond his years. The 6'1", 265-pound heavyweight has trained with at least six different camps and even helped Frank Mir get ready for his title fight with Brock Lesnar at UFC 100.
He comes from a wrestling background and has trained under two former Olympians while attending high school, before moving on to college where he wrestled freestyle and Greco-Roman - eventually earning a National Championship in the style. The high-level wrestler then met up with Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner and MMA standout Travis Lutter where he found his passion for mixed martial arts. He eventually left college, despite the disapproval from his family, to devote all of his energy to the sport of MMA.
FiveKnuckles.com caught up with the TUF 10 heavyweight to discuss a variety of issues, including his passion for the sport, his globetrotting training methods and his experience in the house at TUF 10.
FiveKnuckles.com: You've been invited to train with Greg Jackson in New Mexico and Trevor Whitman in Colorado. Did being on their team help with your decision to join their camps?
Justin Wren: Well, I've trained at Golden Glory in Holland, American Top Team, Xtreme Couture, Cobra Kai, and was training with Frank Mir at Striking Unlimited before his fight with Brock Lesnar. I've seen a lot of places and been treating it like a college recruiting trip. I went on the show and got to meet both sides of the coaches and really liked the guys out in Denver. They gave me an opportunity to come train with them and I love it. I love it more than any other place I've been to. The guys train super smart and I saw that when I was on the show. The elevation is going to help my training and the guys out there are world class. It was a big blessing for me.
FiveKnuckles.com: When were you first exposed to the UFC and mixed martial arts?
Justin Wren: Me and one of my buddies growing up, we'd go out to this place called Traders Village. It was a flea market and there was a spot that sold videos. One time I saw the UFC video and asked the guy about it. I was 13. They were real cheap VHS's on sale and I ended up buying around eight to 10 of them with all my allowance I saved up. I hid them under my bed because I grew up in kind of a conservative family and I would wait 'til my parents went to bed, pop in the tapes and watch them at night. My dad caught me one time and I think he thought I was watching porno or something. It was the UFC - and I think he was more upset that it was the UFC than if it would have been that other stuff (laughs). He would take one tape away, I'd do it again and he'd take that tape away, so it was an ongoing cycle.
FiveKnuckles.com: How did you transition from collegiate wrestler to MMA fighter?
Justin Wren: I had to fight my parents to wrestle. They didn't want me to at first because they were scared I was going to get hurt. I got into wrestling because I saw that Mark Kerr, Mark Coleman, Don Frye - all those guys were just dominating. I was 15 when I got into wrestling and...
