Exclusive: MMA coach Kevin Kearns reflects on recent losses of Marcus Davis and Jorge Gurgel
by Natalia Baage on January 27, 2010

Strength and conditioning coach Kevin Kearns once trained Kenny Florian into six straight wins. But currently, his fighters, Marcus Davis and Jorge Gurgel, are both coming off of losses from last November.

At UFC 106, Davis took on the 6'3" Ben Saunders. He was ready to fight an opponent who was five inches taller than him. However, he came out of that bout with a first-round KO loss due to some severe knees to the head.

"I think as far as Marcus, I think he had a momentary lack of concentration," said Kearns. "That's what I consider it. And maybe dealing with a taller opponent may have been somewhat difficult. But I think it was just a momentary lack of concentration. I know he mentioned to Mark [DellaGrotte], 'I got cut and what went through my head was, "Didn't the doctor do a good job? And I shouldn't have gotten cut again."'  And by the time that went through his head, he took two knees to the face."

Gurgel fought at ShoMMA 4. He battled against Billy Evangelista, but walked away with a unanimous decision loss.

"As far as Jorge? I think Jorge got ripped off," Kearns said. "I think the first round was even. Second round was all Jorge. He had already knocked him down with a head kick and then had him in a triangle. And then the bell rang. And then Evangelista just kept shooting and laying on him in the third round. And I think they gave it 29-27, all three rounds, unanimous for Evangelista."

So where do the fighters go from here? Gurgel currently does not have a fight assigned to him, although he has said that he would be willing to face anybody as long as he can get back in the ring. Davis, on the other hand, is slated to fight Jonathan Goulet at UFC 113 in May. Kearns will make changes to Davis' training dependent upon what DellaGrotte deems necessary and what Davis wants.

"I'm just the designer," said Kearns. "They say, 'Coach, I want this, this, this, and this.'  I make them look good, fight good, hopefully. I make them not lose their wind, not lose their gas. That's my job at the end of the day."

Previously, Kearns has also trained Florian, Stephan Bonnar, Kurt Pellegrino, Alberto Crane, Nate Quarry, Alex Karalexis and Daniel Gracie.
