Fabricio Werdum never got his shot at the title, and he doesn't believe that the champion, Alistair Overeem, is telling the truth.
Back in Aug., Werdum was set to make his Strikeforce debut against heavyweight champion Overeem for the title. However, Overeem pulled out of the fight with an injury, and was replaced by Mike Kyle.
Overeem said that he had a hand injury, which originated from a bar fight in May.
Werdum, though, does not believe him.
"Overeem is running from the fight; I am pretty sure about that," Werdum told MMAWeekly.com. "I cannot be 100% right about the reason he is taking so long to solve his issues and come to fight, but it seems either that the gummy bear juice he is taking to give him super powers is [causing] him to avoid fighting here in America, or he is afraid of having no arms to fight after facing me one more time."
The two fighters battled against each other in the opening round of the Pride 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix, where Werdum defeated Overeem by submission in the second round.
"I want to say to him that if he comes, face me and lose," Werdum said. "I will let him take some pictures with my belt and he will be able to keep good memories from his time as a Strikeforce champion."
Overeem has the distinction of being the very first Strikeforce heavyweight champion. He won the title by beating Paul Buentello in Nov. 2007. Since then, Overeem has fought in Japan and the Netherlands, but never again in America. His next bout will be against Peter Aerts in a K-1 Kickboxing fight in Seoul, Korea, on Sept. 26.
In Werdrum's fight against Kyle, however, Werdum won the bout by submission in under 90 seconds.
Werdum (12-4-1) is a UFC and Pride veteran, who was released from the UFC in Oct. 2008 after suffering a loss by the hands of Junior dos Santos at UFC 90. He, then, signed to Strikeforce in April 2009. His record in the UFC stands at an even 2-2, with wins over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera, and losses to dos Santos and Andrei Arlovski. In the semi-finals of the Pride 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix (the same tournament where he defeated Overeem), Werdum lost a unanimous decision bout to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. In Werdum's next fight, he defeated Aleksander Emelianenko - the brother of Fedor - by submission in the first round.
