UFC and Pride veteran Fabricio Werdum recently confirmed his participation on the main card of Strikeforce's Nov. 7 CBS event. However, its not yet known who his opponent will be.
Former EliteXC heavyweight champion Antonio Silva is a possible opponent for Werdum. Silva is currently in deep negotiaitons with Strikeforce and the UFC to return to competition on U.S soil.
Silva has not competed in the U.S. since being suspended by the California State Athletic Commission for testing positive for an anabolic steroid, which Silva and his camp adamantly deny to this day. This happened following his championsip victory over Justin Eilers at EliteXC: "Unfinished Business" in July 2008. His suspension has now expired and that is why he is negotiating with U.S promotions for a stateside return.
Werdum awknowledged that he verbally accepted the proposed bout against Silva, however, he has doubts that the match up will happen.
"My manager called me asking if I agree to fight [Silva], and I said yes and that I was ready. But I think this fight won't happen anymore", said Werdum to Tatame.com. "He'll probably fight for Sengoku's title. Strikeforce made a partnership with Dream, so my manager said I can also fight in Japan, at Dream."
Werdum may be right about Silva fighting for the Sengoku heavyweight title. Silva is indeed in discussions to likely face Josh Barnett for Sengoku's vacant heavyweight strap. If made, the Silva vs. Barnett title bout could take place on Sengoku's New Year's Eve card.
Werdum (12-4-1) is coming off of a win over Mike Klye in his Strikeforce debut in August at the Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" event. Prior to the win, he was released from the UFC following a loss against Junior Dos Santos at UFC 90 last September. Werdum exited the UFC with a 2-2 record, with wins over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera, while losing to Andrei Arlovski in his Ocatgon debut.
The Chute Boxe fighter, Werdum, has been competing professionally for seven years. He has finished 10 of his 12 career wins and holds other notable wins over the likes of Roman Zentsov, Aleksander Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem.
Silva has won his last six bouts, which include his first two bouts in Sengoku against Yoshihiro Nakao and Jim York. Prior to joining WVR's Sengoku promotion, he went 4-0 under the now-defunct EliteXC banner en route to capturing the promotion's heavyweight title.
Silva sports an overall MMA record of 13-1, with 12 of his wins being by stoppage including nine being by TKO or KO. He suffered his lone career loss against Eric Pele at Bodog Fight: "USA vs. Russia" in December 2006. "Junior" holds notable wins over the likes of Wesley Correira and Ricco Rodriguez.
Strikeforce has made no official announcement about Werdum's participation on the Nov. 7 card nor about who he will face. With less then one month until the event, Strikeforce has only officially announced one bout for the card - the main event heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers.
