"That time Cigano defeated me it was the first time I was knocked out, I wasn’t excepting it, then I had that discussion with UFC, it wasn’t that we argued, but I was upset for losing the way it happened. I had been defeated before, but on a judge’s decision, this was the only time I was knocked out. So I wasn’t on a good state of mind because I had been defeated, I was far from my family. I’m not saying Cigano didn’t deserve it, because then he went there and kept winning. I’d be surprised if he had beaten me down and then lost. He went there and proved himself to be pretty good. I want to win this GP, to earn a belt, because I’ve never won one, and fight UFC’s champion. If it’s Cigano, I’d be a dream coming true. To do this unifier fight and against Cigano, a rematch, it’d be perfect." -Fabricio Werdum
Fabricio Werdum has let it be known that he plans to win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix and then defeat whoever the UFC champion may be in a super fight. Werdum relayed this news to TATME.
"Vai Cavalo" is hoping that the UFC champion is Junior dos Santos. Dos Santos knocked out Werdum in his UFC debut, a thrilling upset at the time. Werdum went on to be released from the promotion following the loss due to contractual disputes with the UFC.
Since the loss to Junior dos Santos, Werdum has put together three straight quality victories with Strikeforce. He defeated Mike Kyle, won a decision over Antonio Silva and pulled one of the greatest upsets of all time when he submitted Fedor Emelianenko. Werdum has not fought since the victory over the Russian legend.
His next fight, which was originally slated for April 9, was pushed back to June 18. Werdum will take on Alistair Overeem in the opening round of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, in a match many consider to feature the top two seeds in the tournament.
If Werdum were to emerge victorious he would then take on Antonio Silva in the semifinals.
