Fabricio Werdum to face Mike Kyle at Strikeforce “Carano vs. Cyborg”
by Jacob Camargo on August 03, 2009

After speculation that he would not compete on the Strikeforce "Carano vs. Cyborg" fight card, UFC and Pride veteran Fabricio Werdum will indeed compete at the event against veteran Mike Kyle. Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz confirmed the news to MMAjunkie.com.

Werdum was originally set to face Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem at the event, but Overeem withdrew from the bout due to a lingering hand injury. Strikeforce had planned to take Werdum off the event altogether but have settled on matching him up against Kyle.

According to the report, Afromowitz stated that the Werdum-Kyle bout would end up on the un-aired preliminary portion of the card as the card features four title bouts taking up the main card slots.

Werdum hasn't competed since October 2008 at UFC 90, where he was upset by rising prospect Junior dos Santos. Following the loss, he was released from the UFC after refusing to take a paycut. Werdum exited the UFC with a 2-2 record and wins over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera. He also dropped his octagon debut to Andrei Arlovski. Nine of his eleven career wins have been via stoppage and he holds other notable career wins over the likes of Roman Zentsov, Alistair Overeem and Aleksander Emelianenko.

Kyle is currently riding a three fight win streak having scored a huge upset victory in his last fight over highly touted light-heavyweight prospect Rafael Cavalcante at Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields". Prior to the streak, he'd lost two straight, including a disqualification loss against Brian Olsen at WEC 20 which resulted in essentially a two-year suspension after he delivered illegal kicks and punches and proceeded to strike Olsen after the bell. Eight of Kyle's twelve career wins have been by KO or TKO and he holds notable wins over UFC vetereans Wes Sims, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka and James Irvin.

Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" takes place on August 15 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California and will feature a 145-pound women's title bout between popular female fighter Gina Carano and the hard-hitting, Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos.

Other title bouts include a welterweight bout between Nick Diaz and Jay Hieron for the newly-created welterweight championship, an interim lightweight title bout in current champ Gilbert Melendez vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida as well as a light-heavyweight title bout between current champ Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Gegard Mousasi.
