Famed Strongman "Pudzian" eyes Tim Sylvia on April 23; Polish event two weeks later
by Giada Esposito on March 03, 2010

Mariusz Pudzianowski has spent most of the last decade dominating the sport of strength athletics, earning the prestigious title of World's Strongest Man a record five times during that span.

Strongman competition is a grueling discipline that requires athletes to pit themselves against a variety of apparatus. And in addition to raw strength it requires explosive speed, endurance, technique, and willpower to succeed. Elite strongmen are used to pushing through pain and adversity on a regular basis, as it requires extreme focus and dedication to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

All of which should prove to be useful qualities when it comes to Pudzianowski's newest competitive discipline: MMA.

"Pudzian" has had a long-standing interest in the martial arts. In addition to being an amateur boxer, he has studied Kyokushin Karate for years, a style with an emphasis on full-contact sparring that is also practiced by UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre

Until recently, the demands of strongman competition have kept the Polish colossus from pursuing a professional fighting career. That changed last year, when he made the commitment to begin training MMA full-time.

Pudzianowski made his debut last December in Warsaw, Poland, against fellow newcomer Marcin Najman. Weighing in at 277-pounds, he overwhelmed his smaller opponent in a display or raw power and ferocity that saw the fight last a mere 43 seconds. Since then, he has been training diligently three times a day, working on his boxing, jiu-jitsu, and wrestling skills.

Earlier this year Pudzianowski agreed to fight at KSW 13 on May 7, though his opponent remains uncertain (earlier reports that he would face Polish fighter Robert Paczkow have still not been confirmed).

Now matters have become even more complicated, as "Pudzian" has confirmed that he also intends to face former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia at a Boston event planned by MMA promotion Moosin on April 23.

"Negotiations are ongoing, and it looks like I will fight with Tim Sylvia," Pudzianowski stated on his personal website.

He added that he had underestimated the difficulties that would arise by agreeing to two fights in such close proximity, as he is used to competing in strongman competitions on short rotation.

"Sometimes as a strongman I can be in Moscow on Friday, and Norway on Sunday," Pudzianowski explained.

Pudzianowski's manager Barbara Demczuk spoke to Polish MMA site Fightsport.pl about the ongoing situation, adding several interesting pieces of information. According to Demczuk, her client still wishes to compete at KSW 13 in May, despite the two week time difference between that event and his potential April 23 confrontation with Sylvia.

Perhaps most importantly, she also revealed that Pudzianowski is still a free agent, without a binding contract to any organization.

"[This] does not preclude the subsequent signing of contracts for the fight against major MMA organizations," said Demczuk.

If "Pudzian" can succeed in his bid to fight twice in two weeks, it will certainly be a testament to his competitive spirit. However, there is no denying that an element of luck would be involved as well, as injuries suffered in a bout with Sylvia could force a cancellation of his participation at KSW 13.

 |  (66) Comments Mickey knox: I seriously think he could destroy Sylvia. He may not have the most technique quite yet, but I don't think Sylvia will be able to defend the hulk smash. Natalia Baage: I don't think Sylvia's being too smart with his gameplans, so I think the Strong Man might win this. Actually, unfortunately, I think he will win it. Look at what happened with Mercer... arlovskiviako: Sylvia is going to "less fit, not as strong and not green Hulk smash" Mariusz Mtx: Whether you like him or not, whether you think he is skilled or not I bet almost everyone here (theres always some haters :p) are intrigued of how far can Mariusz make it. Yeah, he isn't the most technical fighter but I bet that every strikes he lands hurts quite a bit. Nobody can deny he has the power and he also has a strong fighting background so he can actually continue to do the transition to MMA better that what people think. This fight could definitely prove that. Although Sylvia isn't in his best spot right now, for Mariusz, this is a big fight. If he is able to win against Sylvia he should be seen as a more legit fighter, not cause he just beat a non-skilled Sylvia, but because he has beaten a true MMAist and then nobody can say Mariusz isn't one if he does. As far as how will the fight go, I really think Mariusz will win this one. His power will be too much for Sylvia. The Hitman: i already knew this was happening, and i got the big man. he didnt impress me with his soccer kicks, but sylvia sucks Giada Esposito: The other thing I find interesting about this situation is that if Pudzian is successful and cleared to fight in the US, it will open the door for him to bigger promotions as well. His manager is already hyping him as a free agent, and if he can beat Sylvia, I bet Strikeforce at least will be interested. Pudzian is very marketable, and he already has a following that could bring in crossover fans. arlovskiviako: I can't see Mariusz beating anyone that is decent or good. Even 420lb Sylvia should still beat Mariusz. The Hitman: idk if anyone has brought this up, but strongman is spelled wrong in the title Aus_BB: WSM competition used to do a sumo match where the strong men would go 1 on 1 and try to push/wrestle eachother out of the circle, Mariusz wasin't so great at it so striking he has some training wrestling he seems to be starting fresh. Storm: anyone catch his episode on MTV Cribs in Europe?? i expected something a lil better, but he is still sitn FAR better then i am lol. Wandering_Minstrel: I think Pudzian will beat Sylvia via Hulk Smash! The Hitman: tim sylvia, didnt he play jason in the last friday the 13th? arlovskiviako: Yes, Tim Sylvia was a stundouble for michael in Haloween 2 Giada Esposito: It's looking now like Pudzian will fight at KSW 13 on May 7, and then fight Sylvia in Boston on May 21 (assuming he's not injured), since the Moosin event with Sylvia has been postponed. It will be interesting to see if he can pull off the quick turn-around.
