WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko is in talks to make his second appearance in Strikeforce against UFC and Pride veteran Fabricio Werdum at Strikeforce's next CBS event in April 2010.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker revealed the possible heavyweight match up following this past weekend's "Strikeforce: Evolution" event.
If booked, the Emelianenko vs. Werdum bout would headline the card, and the event will also likely feature Strikeforce's middleweight champion Jake Shields making his first title defense against newly-signed Dan Henderson.
Emelianenko made his Strikeforce debut against then-undefeated Brett Rogers on Nov. 7, 2009. Emelianenko scored a second-round TKO win in the fight, which was the main event of Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Rogers." The fight took place in front of 5.46 million viewers, and was broadcast nationally on CBS. The win extended his unbeaten streak to an impressive 28 fights, which include 27 consecutive wins, with one no contest.
Emelianenko holds a nearly flawless 31-1 MMA record, with 24 of his wins coming by stoppage. "The Last Emperor" sports an impressive resume of notable career wins over the likes of Ricardo Arona, Heath Herring, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (x2), Renato Sobral, Mark Coleman (x2), Mirko Filipovic, Matt Lindland, Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski.
Werdum (13-4-1) is currently on a two-fight winning streak, which includes wins in his first two Strikeforce bouts against Mike Kyle and, most recently, Antonio Silva at last month's Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Rogers" event. Prior to joining Strikeforce, he was cut from the UFC following a shocking loss against Junior dos Santos. Werdum exited the UFC with a 2-2 record, with Octagon wins coming over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera.
The Pride and Jungle Fight veteran has finished 11 of his 13 career wins, and holds other notable wins throughout his seven-year career over the likes of Roman Zentsov, Alistair Overeem and Aleksander Emelianenko.
Emelianenko was thought to have been fighting Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem on the April Strikeforce CBS event, however, Strikeforce officials are not sure when Overeem will fight for the organization next. Overeem has not fought for Strikeforce since winning the promotion's heavyweight title in Nov. 2007.
