Fedor Emelianenko is now set to fight MMA journeyman, Jeff Monson, at an M-1 Global event in Russia on November 12 according to mmamania.com
Emelianenko (31-4(1 no contest)) was once heralded as the best mixed martial artist in the world, being undefeated from mid-2001 to late-2009, but recent bouts saw Emelianenko's unbeatable aura fade away.
"The Last Emperor" has recently dropped three consecutive fights to Dan Henderson, Antonio Silva and Fabricio Werdum which also resulted to his departure from Strikeforce. In his heydays, Emelianenko was a force in the heavyweight division during the Pride era in Japan. Mirko Filipovic, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Kevin Randleman and Mark Coleman were just some of the names he dispatched in Pride.
Monson (42-12) is a former NCAA division one wrestler and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt training out of American Top Team. Perhaps most remembered as the one time UFC top heavyweight contender, who unsuccessfully contested for the UFC heavyweight belt against Tim Sylvia at UFC 65, has now spent the better part of the last three years competing in the local circuits.
His most recent bout was a unanimous decision loss to Daniel Cormier at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum. It is interesting to note that Monson is also scheduled to fight former UFC heavyweight, Gabriel Gonzaga, just a month prior to his bout with Emelianenko.
The event is scheduled on the same date as the UFC's inaugural event on Fox. It is currently unclear whether or not if the event would be shown on Showtime, Emelianenko is still under contract due to his affiliation with M-1 Global.
