Fights to make following UFC on Versus 4
by Tim Groves on June 26, 2011

There really isn't anything to say following a night of fights like that. An already awesome card was pushed over the top by a downright storybook comeback by Cheick Kongo. The icky taste from past lackluster events has been permanently erased from the mouths of fans across the nation.

Let's get straight to some fights to make following the event, using the UFC's general rule of matching up winners with winners and losers and losers. Below are five in depth potential match-ups and a quick rundown for everyone else on the card.

Cheick Kongo vs. Shane Carwin

Well following the UFC's rule went down the drain quickly. A fight between these two powerful heavyweights simply makes sense, enough sense to match up a winner and a loser.

In breaking down the UFC heavyweight division you have the guys well above everyone else, Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos, a level of contenders slightly below them and then everyone else. Carwin was recently knocked off of that top pedestal when dos Santos easily outclassed him for three solid rounds. Carwin now resides alongside fellow heavyweights Frank Mir, Brendan Schaub, Brock Lesnar and Minotauro Nogueira.

Schaub and Nogueira are currently slated to meet in August, Carwin has already beaten Mir and no one knows if Lesnar will ever return to the sport. This leaves Carwin without a viable opponent. Many would argue that Carwin should be matched up with Roy Nelson, but both men are currently riding two fight losing streaks and it seems unlikely that the UFC would match them up. Both are well known and another loss for either would eliminate the possibilities of televising their fights.

By placing Carwin up against Kongo, the UFC will either create another contender in the Frenchman or begin to build Carwin back up. A win for Kongo puts him very close to a title shot, while a win for Carwin does the same. That is if Cain Velasquez beats Junior dos Santos, because no one wants to see Carwin and dos Santos fight again.

Charlie Brenneman vs. Brian Foster

I have all the respect in the world for Charlie Brenneman. The guy stepped up to fight Rick Story in a bout that no one gave him a chance of winning. He put it all out there and pulled off an amazing upset in front of his hometown.

But he should not be given Rick Story's spot in the welterweight title picture.

This is the same Brenneman who just recently lost to Johny Hendricks and has victories over Jason High and Amilcar Alves. It was a fantastic victory for him but a slight move back or to the side is in order for The Spaniard.

Foster is returning from a scary diagnosis that saw him pulled from his UFC 129 bout with Sean Pierson due to a brain hemorrhage. He has since been given the green light to return to the Octagon. Prior to the scare Foster had managed to string together two straight impressive victories.

The winner of this proposed bout would then find himself on the brink of title contention.

Matt Mitrione vs. The winner of Ben Rothwell/Mark Hunt

People have already begun to scream for Mitrione to fight either Cheick Kongo or Shane Carwin. They need to take a step back and look at Mitrione's body of work and realize that he...
