Filmmaker Bobby Razak helps the push for MMA legalization in N.Y.

Filmmaker Bobby Razak has been a fan of mixed martial arts for a long time, and he is trying to push for the legalization of the sport in NY.

"I love MMA," Razak told FIGHT Magazine.  "I support MMA.  I want it to be legal everywhere.  I love New York State. I'm working in New York all the time.  I would love to go - it's my dream to always go to Madison Square Garden and watch a fight.  It's the ultimate arena."

Best known for his TapouT documentary, "Underdogs," Razak is currently in the process of finishing three 10-minute short films and a 90-second commercial about NY state and Canadian MMA regulation.  The films showcase NY fighters Phillipe Nover and Lyman Good, and Canadian fighters Patrick Cote and David Loiseau, as well as Georges St. Pierre's trainer Firas Zahabi.

"Marc Ecko contacted me and wanted to do it," said Razak.  "It was kind of Marc Ecko's idea.  Marc's a New Yorker, so he was the guy who was behind it."

The problem in Canada is that the semi-adhered to corresponding law is a 10-year-old law that was channeled towards boxing.

"So because it was geared toward boxing, its not relevant to MMA," said Razak.  "It has not been updated.  So it's very interpretive - some regions hold it, some regions don't."

This sentiment can be seen as part of the country does not hold MMA events, while certain provinces, like Quebec, do.

"In terms of New York, it's not in the hands of the people," said Razak.

While many members of the State Assembly are in favor of passing a law that would legalize MMA events in NY, state assemblyman Bob Reilly has long been on the opposing side of the argument.  The NY bill passed through the Committee on Tourism, Arts and Sports Development earlier this year, and is looking to go to the general assembly.  However, Reilly has publicly stated that he will continue to fight the bill.
