Five Knuckles MMA News Notebook

Welcome to the first edition of the Five Knuckles MMA News Notebook. Here I will gather four of five of the days important news stories and summarize each one for your reading pleasure. I realize a lot of you are pressed for time and others just want a quick run down as opposed to a whole article. You will get that here. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

UFC President Dana White made a surprising announcement yesterday at the UFC 117 pre-fight press conference. The winner of the Jon Fitch-Thiago Alves welterweight showdown will receive a title shot against the winner of the Georges St. Pierre-Josh Koscheck bout that is currently scheduled to take place in December. Many of you already know that Fitch and Koscheck are teammates and have gone on record many times stating they will never fight one another.

When Fitch was asked what would happen if such a scenario would come up, the former number one contender brushed the question off, choosing to tell everyone who would listen that he is only focused on this bout with Alves. The subject of fighting Koscheck would have to wait for another day. Both Fitch and Alves have fallen victim to GSP. Fitch lost a brutal, one-sided unanimous decision to GSP at UFC 87 and Alves suffered a similar loss to GSP at UFC 100.

MMA Fighting is reporting that two bouts at UFC 118 have been hit with the injury bug. Terry Etim has been forced out of his match-up with Joe Lauzon due to a broken rib. He will be replaced by season five of The Ultimate Fighter vet Gabe Ruediger. Yes the same Ruediger who failed to make weight on the show. He has won his last six fights in a row. Alessio Sakara was originally scheduled to face Jorge Rivera who suffered an injury and was replaced by Gerald Harris. Now Sakara is out after suffering a knee injury and will be replaced by a man he defeated a few years ago, Joe Vedepo. With three weeks left until the August 28 card let's hope no one else gets hurt.

MMA Junkie is reporting that Takanori Gomi was the night's highest earner for UFC on Versus 2. The former Pride lightweight champion took home an $80k check. He was also awarded the Knockout of the Night bonus after he sent Tyson Griffin crashing to the canvas from a thunderous right hand. The bonus earned him an additional $40k. Yushin Okami and Jon Jones were next as each earned $46k for their wins over Mark Munoz and Vladimir Matyushenko respectively. For the entire list of payouts please click on the link.

Over the weekend former UFC lightweight Roger Huerta was involved in a fight in Austin, TX. In a video that you can view here, Huerta is seen coming to the aid of a woman who had been sucker punched by some coward. While the video jumps around and you don't actually see too much until the end. At that point a man believed to be Huerta is seen stomping on the guy who punched the girl.

TMZ caught up with Huerta yesterday to get his side of the story. Huerta doesn't deny that he defended the woman and goes on to say that he got the better of...
