A Florida court has ruled in favor of Don King, saying that the boxing promoter has "sole and exclusive rights" to promote Ricardo Mayorga's fights. Despite this, officials at Shine Fights say they will proceed with their "Worlds Collide" show, in which Mayorga's MMA bout with Din Thomas will headline.
Broward County circuit judge Marc Gold made the ruling today after lengthy court debates yesterday. Mayorga's contract stated that Don King Promotions had "sole and exclusive rights to secure and arrange all professional boxing bouts." Shine Fights legal counsel argued that the contract should be limited to boxing bouts, but Judge Gold ruled that Mayorga's participation in this evening's MMA fight would amount to "tortious interference," i.e. the willful disturbance of a contract.
Despite the injunction, Shine Fights will proceed with the fight and the show, which airs on PPV live from the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, NC. According to Shine Fights, they're "still going forward with the fight."
Mayorga will make his MMA debut against BJJ black belt and UFC veteran Thomas. The two have developed a grudge in the lead-up to the fight, with a long war of words and a scuffle at a prefight press conference. Mayorga-Thomas will anchor the broadcast, and the live card will begin with the MMA debut of three time BJJ world champion and 2009 ADCC Absolute champion, grappling ace Braulio Estima.
