Gray Maynard's former teammates, Frank Trigg and John Gunderson, open up about Maynard's departure from Xtreme Couture to the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) according to yahoosports.com.
"Gray just was not prepared. It was really one of those deals where a coach within his staff just would not pay attention any other coaches. He was getting really upset if any other coach tried to explain to him 'hey, this is how hard I'm going to push Gray in my session. You need to back off in your session so he can recover. Maynard wasn't prepared. It's ultimately up to one coach that didn't pay attention," Trigg said.
Gunderson also adds that Maynard failed to be physically and mentally prepared for his last fight against Frankie Edgar at UFC 136, where Maynard loss via fourth round KO.
"I think if Gray really put the time in and the work in, Gray could finish him," Gunderson said.
Maynard announced that he was leaving Xtreme Couture six weeks prior to his UFC 136 fight and the outcome would not change his decision. Maynard cited his change in camps was to further round out his skills and failed to mention if the move to AKA was a permanent one, which opens the possibility for a return to Xtreme Couture.
Xtreme Couture also underwent some changes at the end of 2011, when Randy Couture returned to the gym having been absent for most of that year. Coaches Gil Martinez and Ron Frazier were removed; Martinez was Maynard's coach going into his UFC 136 bout with Edgar.
"You've got to go to different places. That's why GSP got so good so quickly. He didn't stay in Montreal. Gray has realized that's what he has to do," Trigg said.
