Frank Mir: "If Lesnar can't defend it in a year, strip him of the title."
by Natalia Baage on December 06, 2009

With current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar out of commission indefinitely, it has left the other heavyweights in a bit of a funk.  Especially former champion Frank Mir.

With Lesnar out, UFC President Dana White has been thinking about implementing an interim belt for the 265-lbs. division.  However, he has not committed to the interim title, and is waiting on more news about Lesnar's health before making the decision.

"I hate interim titles," Mir told Sherdog.com.  "I think it's stupid.  It's retarded.  It's confusing to fans."

Mir, who has a very rocky history with Lesnar, wants to fight for the belt again.  While he wants another shot at Lesnar, he is willing to fight somebody else in a title bout.  However, with Lesnar still holding onto that belt while he is sidelined for at least another six months, Mir is getting antsy about another title shot.

"Let [Lesnar] keep the belt [until he can fight again]," said Mir, "or go ahead and put it away.  Either he can defend it, or he can't.  If he can't defend it in a year, strip him of the title.  I've lived on both sides of it.  If we can avoid it, let's avoid it."

Mir had been stripped of his belt when he was the heavyweight champion.  In June 2004, he had captured the belt, but in Sept. 2004, he was in a motorcycle accident that tore all of the ligaments in his knee and broke his femur.  An interim belt was created while he had surgery and went through rehabilitation.  However, by Aug. 2005, Mir was still not able to compete, and was stripped of his belt after keeping it for 14 months while injured.

The latest news about Lesnar came via White three days ago.  White, who is close friends with Lesnar, has kept in close contact with the champion, even traveling to visit him at the hospital and making sure he was treated by good doctors.

"Tons of people keep asking me about brock," White wrote on his Twitter account.  "He is still VERY sick.  We are unsure about his future."

Even though Mir and Lesnar are foes, the former champion is still pulling for the current champion to return, and has offered his support to Lesnar during his recovery.

"He's a pretty tough guy," Mir said.  "If anybody can get through it, it has to be him.  I want him to be able to be there for his kids.  Do I still want to go in there and rip his arm off? Absolutely."
